She was standing at the kitchen window when she saw Dimitri pull in. He was driving her new to her Ford Escape. He had said that it would have more room than his Impala. Alicia personally thought that he didn’t want to run the risk of dinging up his beautiful car.
She got her first look at Dimitri’s parents now as they got out of the car. Dimitri had his father’s dark good looks, but his father was smaller built. Alicia did not think that his younger days the senior Mr. Petrescu would have been so built.
Mrs. Petrescu was smaller built, closer to Alicia’s own height. She had a halo of black hair that was going gray in multiple places. They both looked well dressed. Alicia couldn’t remember what Dimitri’s father did, or if he’d even said.
As they grew closer to the door, Alicia had a sudden panic as to what they would say about the small apartment. Had Dimitri warned them? She hoped that he had. She wished that he hadn’t been quiet about his conversations with his parents. This was insanity.
“Alicia!” Dimitri smiled at her as he opened the door.
“Here I am!” She put on her best smile as she tightened her arms around the baby. She knew she would have to hand Nadia off to her grandparents soon, but for a few more minutes she would keep her as a security blanket. “Hello!”
Dimitri smiled proudly. He stepped fully in so that his parents could enter. For a moment, Alicia and her in-laws looked at each other.
“Alicia, these are my parents, Alexander and Rosa Petrescu. And this,” Dimitri poked Nadia’s nose gently, “is our baby girl Nadia.”
“It is a pleasure to finally meet you.” Alicia offered her free hand. Alexander Petrescu took it, shaking it.
“It is nice to meet you, Alicia.”
“Very nice!” Rosa moved forward. She gave Alicia a quick kiss on the cheek but her arms were held out for the baby. Alicia grinned. She could not blame her. Nadia was almost a year old and had not met her grandmother. Alicia could not imagine any grandmother who would be all right with that fact.
“Oh, Nadia.” The older woman crooned. “What a beautiful little girl. She is beautiful, just beautiful.” She looked back and forth between Alicia and Dimitri. Nadia seemed fairly content, but a bit confused as to these strangers making such a fuss over her.
“That she is.” Dimitri slipped his arm around Alicia’s waist. “Why don’t we go into the living room?”
“Much better!” Alicia agreed. “That way we can get comfortable. You two can tell us all about your trip.”
“What is to tell?” Alexander shrugged. “We get on plane, we fly, we arrive.” Rosa shot him a harsh glance.
Feeling slightly less confident, Alicia lead them all into the living room. Once there, Rosa continued to fuss over the baby as she and Alexander settled onto one couch.
“How do you like it here so far?” Alicia wondered what the answer would be given Alexander’s previous disposition.
“We have not seen enough to really tell.” Rosa smiled at her over the top of the baby’s head. “But it must be good place if Dimitri chooses to remain here.”
“Yes,” Alexander nodded. “You are citizen now, Dimitri? You can stay here forever?”
“I am getting very close to having the final paperwork.” Dimitri explained.
“You stay married afterwards?” Alexander was looking between the two of them. Alicia felt like her heart had just skipped a beat.
“I, um--"
“Of course we will.” Dimitri took over the question. “Why would we not?” Alexander shrugged.
“Seems like no point after you have Green Card.”
“Now Alexander,” Rosa frowned at him, “we said that we did not know why they were married.”
“You two did not get married for Green Card?” Alexander turned from his wife back to Alicia and Dimitri. Alicia looked at Dimitri. He was welcome to this one too.
“We did.” Dimitri admitted. His hand reached over, closing around Alicia’s. “But it was a good thing. We are very happy, and Nadia has just made us happier.”
He smiled over at Alicia, and she smiled back. Her mother-in-law looked pleased. Alexander merely seemed to accept it. “Regardless, seems like smart reason to marry to me.” It was so much easier than telling her parents. Alicia tightened her fingers on Dimitri’s. She wasn’t quite sure about her father-in-law, but at least he didn’t disapprove.
Alicia had gone from nervous to exhausted. Maybe she was exhausted because she had been so nervous all day. They’d had dinner out with her parents. Alexander was a quiet man. Rosa was quiet too, but she seemed more pleasant. She didn’t really know what either had thought of her, though they had both been polite enough.
Dimitri had driven them back to the hotel. Alicia had come home to put the baby to bed. Nadia had remained smiley, but she was out as soon as she was in her crib. Alicia felt the same way. She had almost dozed off when she heard Dimitri come in.
“Did you get them settled?” She didn’t get out of bed when he came into the room. Dimitri nodded.
“Yeah. They are tired. Big trip, jet lag, it is a lot.”
“Yes it is.” Alicia sighed. “Did they hate me?”
“Of course not!” Dimitri pulled off his shirt, tossing it into the laundry basket. “Why would you think such a thing?”
“I don’t know.” She looked over at him. “They’re just hard to read.” Dimitri smiled at her. He stopped undressing, moving to lay down beside her.
“They are different people than you are used to, it’s true. But they see that I am happy, and they adore Nadia. They are happy for both of us.” Alicia shook her head.
“I almost died when your dad asked if we married so you could stay in the country.” Dimitri laughed at that.
“Well, at least it is out in the open. Now, we do not have to worry about what they will say.”
“So true.” Alicia shook her head. “And so different from how my parents reacted.”
“That is also true.” Dimitri agreed. Alicia looked at him for a long moment.
“Who would you be like?”
“What?” He seemed caught off guard from the question.
“Who would you be like? If Nadia came home and said she had married a boy so that he could stay in the country, which set of parents would you act like?”
Dimitri considered. He had never thought of it.
“I suppose that we cannot judge.”
“No, we can’t.” Alicia agreed. “Besides, we know what is on the other side.”
“That’s true too.” Dimitri kissed her. “So as long as he was good to her, and she was happy, I would approve.”
“Me too.” After what had come between them, Alicia would never want it any other way.
