  And then my son, Sujesh, who is studying law in Nottingham University; that will make the late judge, Punch Coomaraswamy, a happy man because he swears by Nottingham University. He was not only a mentor but also a good friend.

  And finally, I would like to thank my wife. She is not only my wife, she is my best friend and there were many occasions when I had to literally lean on her shoulder because I couldn’t walk. Thank you for having wide shoulders. Many a time, I have shed tears of frustration and despair on her shoulders. I must thank her for one thing — she and my elder sister defied the doctor’s orders and did not take me back home to die as some people would say. They will keep me in hospital and do their best. Prayers will help. I am glad they defied the doctor’s orders for if not, most probably, I won’t be here standing talking to you.

  And today has been a very happy day for me. A wonderful day in a sense that I’m surrounded by people whom I respect and people whom I love. I am so happy that if I don’t have any tomorrows, it doesn’t matter because I have today to remember.

  The Yellow Ribbon Subhas Anandan Star Bursary Award event was held on 28 October 2014, at the Supreme Court Auditorium. The Guest-of-Honour was Mr K Shanmugam.
