Knox Grayson is crude, callous, and dangerously handsome. He’s also a billionaire, my father’s best friend and business partner, and I should probably mention, he’s 20 years older than me.
Knox has always told me that I’m a good girl, so I should know better than to be such a tease to him – especially since he’s Daddy’s best friend, but after our accidental kiss on my 18th birthday, I can’t get him out of my head. I keep dreaming about our lives together - kissing, making love, and getting married.
I know my dreams will never come true, until my father hires me as Knox’s new assistant forcing us to work together, in more than one way.
Daddy will kill Knox if he finds out about our fling, so I have to hide it at all costs. It’s fun for now – and I plan to enjoy it while it lasts.
That might’ve worked until he knocks me up.
With threats from his jealous ex-wife hanging over my head and my desperation to hide this pregnancy from my father, I soon find that I am in way over my head.
But Knox is my addiction.
I don’t think I could stop even if I tried.
Chapter 1
“Well, you are 18 now, and I thought you would want to get started in big business. I believe everyone should know how to handle customer service and such, but I don’t believe you need to do that in a fast food restaurant.” My dad smiled at me with that charming smile of his.
I wasn’t buying it. I was still reeling from the news he’d just given me – he had gotten me a job working as a personal assistant for his best friend.
Of course, I felt thrilled to be given such a job, especially right out of high school. I’d already become tired of looking for a position, and I wasn’t too eager to dive into college just yet. Thankfully, my dad jumped in to save the day as he so often did for me in the past. But this time, I was more than grateful.
It’d been a few months since I had seen his friend – but I’d thought about him every single day. The last time was my birthday party – and I still remembered the events as though they had taken place yesterday:
“Happy birthday to you!” everyone sang and I blew out the candles. This was it – I was finally turning 18. A grown ass woman after waiting so long for it, and I was eager to get started in my newfound adult life. Sure, I didn’t expect there to be huge changes taking place overnight, but I couldn’t wait to be treated like the adult I had now become.
“Happy birthday Sweetheart!” my dad nearly shouted in my ear as he planted a kiss on the side of my head.
I groaned and rolled my eyes. “Daddy! Stop! I’m not your little girl anymore; you can’t just do that to me.” I made a show of wiping the side of my face with the back of my hand while the others gathered around the table laughed.
My father even joined in the laughter and brushed off my comment with a shake of my shoulders. “You’re always going to be my little girl, Meagan, nothing is ever going to change that!”
I was about to argue further, when the door opened and Knox Grayson, my father’s best friend, walked into the house. My jaw fell open—I hadn’t seen him in a couple of years, and he was still every bit as handsome as I remembered him being.
“Knox? I had no idea you were in town! You should have called me!” my father said with another laugh. He rose from the table and vigorously shook hands with his friend before pulling him in for a big hug. They both slapped each other on their backs as they greeted each other.
As for me, I could hardly contain my own excitement.
I loved Knox—always had, but since I’d become a teenager, my passion for the man had grown even more. He was above and beyond any celebrity crush I ever had, though I always did assume he could be considered a celebrity himself. As the founder of Starboard Industries, one of the biggest music labels in the country, he was a billionaire – making my father’s millions look like mere pocket change. This wasn’t the main thing. He had always been so good looking. So sexy, really. Tall, muscular and just yummy to look at.
“What’re you doing here?” I asked when it was my turn to give him a hug. I had to force myself to turn my head as he took me in his arms, my instinct being to bury my face in his chest and breathe in the rich scent of his cologne.
“Hey, Kiddo! It’s your birthday, and a big one at that. I couldn’t just not come now, could I?” he teased.
I hated letting go of him, but I knew I had to – there were others who wanted to also step in and greet him. I took a step back and watched as he was engulfed in the crowd. Knox was popular with all of my father’s friends as well as my own; in fact, many of my father’s friends were the parents of mine.
The party really livened up after Knox showed up, but I couldn’t shake the question out of my mind why he was alone? Knox married his high school sweetheart right after they graduated, and it was strange to see him here without his wife. My father had often said she couldn’t bear to let him out of her sight, fearing he might not be faithful to her. This was odd in itself, how could they have a marriage if she didn’t trust him at all?
Of course, I could see why though.
With a body so gorgeous and a personality so perfect, as the recipe for any woman to fall in love with the man, regardless of his relationship or, dare I say it, her age. Although I was still the star of the show at my party, I couldn’t get enough of Knox. He gifted me with a small necklace which I instantly fell in love with, insisting that he himself put it on me in front of everyone.
Then later in the evening when most of the other partiers left I had the chance to see Knox alone – and it was then when he told me he had divorced his wife. I knew he’d had a couple of drinks, and I’d also managed to sneak a beer myself when my father wasn’t looking, but something about the conversation made me feel so—adult.
He confided in me how he’d been feeling over the past few years, and how it had been time to just call it off. It sounded like a messy divorce, and I hated to see the toll it had clearly taken on him. I leaned in and put my arms around his shoulders, listening to him and offering as many condolences as I could. I didn’t mean for it to happen, but when he suddenly looked at me like he had never looked at me before, I couldn’t help it.
Closing my eyes, I leaned in, and when our lips touched, I felt an electric shock run through my entire body, down to the very tips of my toes. I don’t know how long the kiss lasted—though I can bet, it wasn’t for more than a few seconds. My world tilted, at least if felt as if it did. I’d been kissed before, but this—I almost got dizzy from it.
The sound of my own best friend, Kenzie, coming up the stairs and into the kitchen broke us apart. He quickly stepped to the other side of the room.
Kenzie seemed oblivious to anything that had just happened when she saw me. “You’re missing your own party!” she drawled.
I shook my head, wondering if it was obvious to any of the other adults that she, too, had been indulging in drinks she should not have been.
“She’s right, you go on,” Knox said before I had any time to reply.
I looked back at him, and I could see in his eyes so much passion, my heart melted on the spot. Saying nothing, I followed my friend back out to the party and enjoyed even more attention being lavished on me.
But I couldn’t get the kiss out of my head.
My crush for Knox had always been fierce, but it grew to a burning passion ever since that afternoon, and he was all I could think about. I dreamt about his lips – about his body. I wanted nothing more than to make out with him – to have sex with him. I envisioned what it would be like to spread my legs and let him enter me, enjoying me with all the passion he had inside him.
I even envisioned that one day, the two of us would be married.
But after the party, he left again. At least, he seemed to be too busy to spend any time with my father and incidentally, me. I heard that he was busy with work, and I accepted he would always be one of my fantasies – until today.
Hearing that my father had gotten me a job as Knox’s assistant was enough to make my heart pound – and my panties damp. I would get to see him every day – to do anything he asked me to do and to make him happy. I would be the girl he went to for anything he needed. He would think of me first.
“Meagan?”
My father’s voice broke into my thoughts, and I almost jumped with fright at the sound of it. “Yeah?”
“I asked if you wanted the position?” he prompted, staring at me as though I had lost my mind.
I quickly nodded. “Yes! Sorry, I was distracted. Yes,” I mumbled.
He sat back in his chair with a broad grin on his face. “Excellent,” he said. “You start tomorrow.”
Chapter 2
I felt so nervous starting my first day at the office – I had been in the building several times with my father before, so I knew my way around, but I’d never done anything with any of the equipment or programs. My father had insisted I enroll in several of the computer courses in school, and I now felt glad that he did. Normally, Knox would require anyone working on the software in his company to have at least a bachelor’s degree before they were even allowed to touch any of his computers, and here I was, getting ready to learn with nothing more than high school.
“Stef here will teach you all the basics, but if you have any questions, feel free to go to just about anyone in here. I like to keep everyone on the top floor here on the same page with things…it makes decisions a lot less confusing that way,” Knox explained to me as he showed me around.
Stef was the woman who had been playing the role of both personal assistant as well as web design, and I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy when I saw her.
She was beautiful, and the way she acted with Knox was so natural, I hated to see how close they were. But I quickly reminded myself that she was leaving this position, and I would be the one who would be taking over. I could prove myself to be more indispensable and better able to handle anything than she could.
“Well, if you think you’re ready to handle it, then I’ll see you at home,” my father said.
He had told me he wanted to give me a ride on my first day, but I got the feeling it was more of an excuse to get to see Knox than it was to make sure I made it to work safely. After all, I was an adult now I didn’t need Daddy bringing me to work like it was my first day of school.
“I told you I could have managed getting here myself,” I said with a smile. I was only half-kidding with the look I gave him, but I could see he only took the humor out of it. I rolled my eyes as he turned his attention back to Knox, and I decided it best to focus on what would soon by my personal workspace.
Within a few moments, Knox had returned. He crossed his arms and gave me a mockingly critical look.
I smiled at him teasingly.
“Well, who would have thought one day, Joseph Thompkins’ daughter would be working for me?” He shook his head, pretending to be amazed.
I crossed my arms back at him, drawing myself up to my full height. “Who would have thought that the day would come when I would choose to work for Knox Grayson, media billionaire?” I raised my eyebrows at him with a playfully challenging look.
He laughed as he dropped his arms to his side. “As I said, you’re going to get the gist of what you have to do from Stef…wherever she went and if there is anything else you need, don’t hesitate to ask.” He winked at me as he walked back toward his office.
I could feel my cheeks flushing pink. I was glad I wore enough blush to take away the stark contrast the heat would have shown on my pale cheeks, but I still hoped he didn’t notice.
“First day with a real job I take it?”
A voice behind me interrupted my thoughts, and I turned with a whirl to see Stef. I had briefly met her with my father, and though I did feel jealous of the relationship she had with Knox, I had to admit, I hoped she would like me as well. “I guess you could say that. My father always thought I would go right from school into Harvard, so he wasn’t too keen on me wasting my time with jobs that wouldn’t work for me long term.” I knew this was partially a lie, but I didn’t care. Anything that would get this woman to not judge me would make me happy.
“Daddy’s little girl, huh?” she asked with a slight raise of her eyebrows as she walked over and leaned over the desk, clicking away at the computer. “Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Just remember that you’re in a whole new world now, and there’s a whole new meaning to that phrase,” Stef said as she looked over her shoulder at me.
I felt uncomfortable and I hoped my nervousness wouldn’t show. I shifted from one foot to another, then I tossed my high ponytail over my shoulder, protesting my ignorance. “I think I can handle it,” I said with far more confidence than I really felt.
She gave me a light smile, then she shook her head. “I remember when I was just like you…keep up that attitude, and you aren’t going to have to worry about a thing.” She winked at me then pulled out the chair, motioning for me to take a seat.
I obeyed, and did what I could to focus on the scr
een in front of me, though I couldn’t shake the feeling that Knox had left his door partially open for a reason. I had no idea if he usually kept his door open or if it was some kind of an accident, but the fact that I could see the edge of his desk kept driving me crazy.
I wished he had opened it all the way and I could see what he was doing in there – or confirm whether he was really watching me like I hoped he was. But with the door closed as much as it was, I could only see scraps of movement inside the room from the corner of my eye, and I would have to be happy with that.
“Now, it’s your turn,” Stef said suddenly.
I gulped as I put my hands on the keyboard, silently praying that I’d been paying attention enough to what she said, so I would be able to do the same thing. I’d better stop daydreaming and do my job.
“Take a deep breath and show me that confidence,” she encouraged.
I smiled. Suddenly, it didn’t matter how close this woman had been with Knox in the past. I liked her and I intended to show her I could handle myself even in this kind of environment. I was beautiful, bold, and strong…a grown woman now and one who knew what she wanted in life. I wanted Knox and this was a fact I couldn’t deny either. I’d wanted him for a long time.
A grown woman who knew what she wanted —and how to get it.
Chapter 3
I was amazed how fast three weeks could fly by, but before I even felt like I blinked, they had. I’d settled into my new job perfectly and felt eager to see where it would all take me. If I were perfectly honest with myself, I had to admit I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect working with Starboard Industries, but I soon learned it was like working with my own group of best friends – at least, one of them.
Stef and I got along much better than I thought we would, and before long, I had come to think of her as one of my closest friends on the floor. Of course, the others working there were nice to me, but there was a level of reserve between us. I wasn’t certain if I was the one who’d put it there or if they were, but I wasn’t really worried about it.
