Nadia’s face tightened. “I remembered when I joined the force. I spent all that time putting my life on the line. That’s when I was truly alive. I realized if I went out here by myself, I’d be going out here to die.” Then she glanced at Cooper. “If I help someone else, maybe I’ll have a fighting chance.”

Lauren smiled. “I like the way you think.” She quickened her pace. “Well, you may just get a chance to help a lot more people.”

“What do you mean? I’m sorry, we bailed out of there so quickly I don’t remember what you said our plans were,” Karen said.

“There are some families ahead of us on this road. They’re planning to set up camp near East River. Doctor Tran went with them. He told me about it last night. But we should catch up to them in a few hours.” She patted the wagon. “With all this equipment, we may be able to treat them, help them get through this damn virus.”

Tom Criver’s boot hit the asphalt of the street that led off past the Eagleton town limits into the horizon, where a mass of tall trees awaited them.

“So, did you bring the map?” Tom asked nonchalantly.

Cheryl turned and glared at him. “I hope for your sake that’s a joke, because I still can kick your ass, even with a one hundred and five degree fever.”

Tom tried not to break his composure. “Oh, I’m sure it’s on me somewhere. We may have to hike all the way back home to find it.” He patted himself in a mock effort to find the map, but then threw away the façade and smiled. “Don’t worry, I have it in my pack.”

Cheryl shook her head. “You are so horrible.” She chuckled.

“Think you can put up me with me all the way to East River?”

“I put up with you for this long.” She grabbed Tom’s arm and squeezed it. “I’m not going to stop now.”

Renewed strength flowed throughout Tom Criver’s body. Being able to feel Cheryl’s touch, even if it felt weaker than usual, made all the difference. He’d make it to East River with his wife, no doubt about it.

He sucked in two lungfuls of air. “Ready?”

  “Ready,” she replied.

He took his first step down the road. Cheryl followed.
