Bella almost collapsed against him in relief. Her body began to warm again. When she heard the news, dread had smothered out the heat in every crevice of her body. She hadn’t been surprised by her father’s actions only slightly stunned he had gone to this much trouble for her. He must have really hated her to do this. Then she raised her head. “Are you sure my father is dead?”

Nikoli nodded. “Ivan almost tore his head off his body. He is most certainly dead.”

Bella leaned into him again and whispered, “Thank god for that.” After a moment she laid her head on his chest with her ear pressed to his skin. She listened to his heart beat inside his chest for a moment and imagined it beat for her.

After a few moments, Nikoli lifted her face to his by hooking his fingers under her chin. Looking into her eyes he asked, “Why did you try to leave me and Malina?”

“I came from that man’s loins. I carry his DNA and believe me when I say my mother wasn’t much better. How could you ever care about someone like me? I can’t hide from the truth anymore. I can’t bury my head in the sand either and wish it were all a mistake. My parents were horrible people and I’m worried that one day, I’ll be just like them. That one day, I’ll hurt my child. I can’t expose her to that. I love her far too much for that.”

“And that right there is the key.” Nikoli smiled at her. “You love Malina too much for that to happen to her. I never knew your mother but both she and your father only ever loved one person and that was themselves. They looked out for number one and number one alone. Hell, they didn’t even care about each other and they sure as hell didn’t care about you.”

“What are you saying?” Bella asked.

“You had extra love to give our daughter because you thought I didn’t want it.” He sighed. “I probably made the biggest mistake in my life the morning after we spent the night together. I knew that the moment I saw your eyes. The sparkle left them as soon as you saw the cash I put in your hands. I let you walk away from me but you took something even more valuable with you. You took a tiny piece of me that grew inside you. And instead of throwing it away, you nurtured it and allowed it to expand your world. You gave my daughter life and in return, she brought you back to me. You are right where you belong. In my arms again.”

Bella searched his face for any signs he didn’t want her here. When she didn’t find anything she whispered, “Are you sure you want me here too?”

“Sweetheart, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I want both you and Malina to meet my son Nicky. We’re a family now and I will never treat you or Malina with anything but respect and caring.”

Bella closed her eyes. He didn’t say he loved her but it was close enough for her. She still loved him and she loved her daughter, her life was better than ok at this point, she had Nikoli with her and Malina.

  About K.J Dahlen

Author of the bestselling, award winning Bratva Brothers and Satan Spawns MC Series…

I live in a small town (population495) in Wisconsin. From my deck, I can see the Mississippi River on one side and the bluffs, where eagles live and nest on the other side. I live with my husband Dave and dog Buddy. My two children are grown and I have two grandchildren. I love to watch people and that has helped me with my writing. I often use people I watch as characters in my books and I always try to give my characters some of my own values and habits.

I love to create characters and put them in a troubling situation then sit back and let them do all the work. My characters surprise even me at times. At some point in the book, they take on a life of their own and the twists and turns they create becomes the story. Of all the stories, I could write I found I like mystery/thrillers the best. I like to keep my readers guessing until the very end of the book.
