21.Between ca. 925 B.C. and 586 B.C., a succession of Jewish kings ruled the independent kingdoms of Israel and Judah. During the second and first centuries B.C., the independent state of Judea was ruled by the Hasmonean dynasty, descendants of the Maccabees. During the rest of that three-thousand-year period, the land was a tiny sliver ruled from a distance by a succession of empires: the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Crusaders, the Mamluks, and finally the Ottoman Turks.

35.Although there were anti-Jewish riots in 1921 and 1922, the beginning of the Arab terror war against Jewish nationalism can be traced to 1929, when Arabs destroyed the centuries-old Jewish community of Hebron, the site of the tomb of the Jewish Patriarchs. Sixty-four Jews were murdered and the remainder were expelled. At the same time there were Arab riots against Jews in Jaffa, Safed, Acre, and other communities. Hundreds more Jews were murdered. There were numerous other outbreaks of violence against Jews throughout the British Mandatory period.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Writing a book is a daunting task that involves hundreds of hours, and much energy and research. I would like to highlight and mention those individuals who were directly instrumental in the writing and publishing of this book.

I begin by thanking my dear friend Mark Leslie, who dedicated hours, days, and months to research and writing from beginning to end. I am forever grateful to have been so fortunate to have a knowledgeable, passionate, and dedicated friend like you. Jerry Gordon, my dear friend, mentor, confident, advisor, and the anchor that keeps me grounded in the storms of attacks and hate from my enemies. Karen Freeman, my dear friend, whose research has been invaluable. Without her help I wouldn’t have made my deadline. Dr. Joseph Gebeily, my friend who is also a survivor of the Lebanese war, was always there to help answer any question I had about the war. Susan Smith and Liz Black for their help in editing the proposal. My agent Lynne Rabinoff, whose effort made this book see the light. She is not only one of the most professional people I have worked with, Lynne is also a beautiful human being inside and out who became my very dear and wonderful friend. Nichole Argyres, my editor at St. Martin’s Press, who kept everyone in line throughout the whole process. Working with her was a pleasure. Charles, who worked by my side and wiped my tears during the day and held me through my bouts of PTSD at night, reassuring me that everything is okay, as I relived my experiences to write this book. I am forever grateful for his love and kindness.
