  EPILOGUE

Everything had happened so fast. Full blown panic had set in.

Darin had called out to me, screaming my name in a raspy voice full of pain. I had found him lying on the kitchen floor on his side in the middle of the night after hearing him call out to me. Terrified, I’d called 911 and pulled the upper half of his body into my chest. His skin felt clammy, his lips a strange color—almost blue.

“Hold on, baby,” I whispered to him. “Hold on. Please, hold on.”

I could see the flashing lights of the ambulance pulling into the driveway. I let go of Darin to open the front door and let them in.

“Over here!” I cried out. “He’s over here!”

They began to work on him right away, checking his vitals. One man yelled out to another. They brought over a stretcher and began hooking him up to portable machines.

I clutched my swollen belly, trying to reassure the baby—our son—doing flip-flops inside of me, that it was okay. We had just had an ultrasound yesterday revealing the baby’s sex. A perfect, healthy baby boy, the ultrasound tech had told us. I had looked over at Darin. He had taken my hand and squeezed it. He was so proud. I remembered thinking what an amazing father he was going to make.

  “He’s crashing!” someone yelled out.

More panic surged through me as they rushed him out the front door. I followed in my nightgown. I watched in horror as they started doing CPR on him and pumping his chest with their hands.

I rushed over to him and grasped his hand tight in mine. “What’s going on?” I asked, tears streaming down my face.

“He’s going into cardiac arrest,” someone quickly explained.

“We’re losing him. We need the defibrillator, now!”

No, no, no! I had just gotten him back. He was mine. He couldn’t be taken away from me now. We were going to have a son!

I thought for a moment I felt Darin’s hand squeeze mine. Then as suddenly as it had come, his hand went limp again, his grip lifeless. And I knew…I just knew in that moment that he had left me.

  “No!” I shrieked.

They continued to do CPR and work on him, shocking him over and over again. I could barely see anymore past all the tears. I fell to my knees, my fingers digging into the wet grass. Someone came over to me and held me.

“Are you okay? Ma’am, are you okay?”

I could hear the voice, knew someone was talking to me, but everything was still a blur. I looked up and focused in on Darin’s limp hand still hanging over the side of the stretcher as they shocked him yet again.

  “He’s gone,” I whispered.

  “Ma’am?”

“He’s gone,” I repeated. Just when we got our life back, he’s gone, just like that.

I laid down on the cold ground and curled up into a ball. I wondered how I would ever be able to make it now on my own without the love of my life—my husband—my Darin.
