by Miko Branch
Forecasting—Predicting the level of orders or sales by day, week, month, quarter, year, or longer.
Funding for discounts or specials at food, drug, or mass retailers—Normally, promotions are funded at full retail, in which the manufacturer has responsibility for the promotion and the retailer has no out-of-pocket expenses. If funded at cost, the retailer is investing the margin difference between cost and full retail.
In-line—What is contained in the aisle and generally updates only once or sometimes twice a year.
IRI/Nielsen numbers (tracking sales) —Sales data (each time an item scans) that is sold by mass retailers to IRI and Nielsen, which then formats and resells the data to manufacturers and others. Allows a look at competitive sales.
Margins —Net profit margin percentage equals net profit (retail minus cost) divided by the retail.
Markdowns—Multiple meanings: 1) reduction in retail to clear product out of the store; 2) advertising scans; 3) reduction in retail to match other retailers; 4) reduction of defectives.
Planogram —The “map” of products placed on the shelf. Very specifically defined by location, then item, number of facings, and number of items per facing.
Price points—Retail prices.
Shrinkage—Theft by shoppers or employees. Normally discovered as a discrepancy between physical inventory and what the system shows should be on hand.
Rollbacks—Walmart’s approach to pricing discounts.
Shipping—Prepaid (vendor includes the cost of shipping in their cost) or collect (where the retailer picks up the goods in exchange for a lower cost).
SKU—Stock keeping unit. Each individual item is an SKU.
Store counts—Number of stores a retailer has, most often broken down by region, demographics, or distribution.
Suggested retail pricing—Avoids antitrust violations. Retailers cannot conspire to keep prices at certain levels. Some retailers will allow MAP (minimum advertised price) pricing, but it gets iffy regarding antitrust.
TPCs—Temporary price cuts (Target).
TPRs—Temporary price reductions (other retailers).
THE LANGUAGE OF HAIR: DEFINITIONS

Bantu Knots—When hair is sectioned off in diamond, triangle, or square shapes and twisted into knots.

Relaxed—Hair that is chemically altered to be straight.
Shrinkage—When your hair shrivels up.
Stretch Out—Maximizing the length of one’s hair by blow-drying, twisting, or braiding.
Shingling—Smoothing hair down between two fingers, a small section at a time, for maximum definition. Method created by Titi Branch.
Silkener—A chemical process in which the hair texture is chemically altered to create a looser, shinier, more defined, and manageable hair pattern.
Single-Process Color—A new color or toner is applied all over to create a new base color. The hair is lifted and deposited in one easy step.
Sulfates—Cleaning ingredients that are added to products to make them clean using suds.
