It has been my pleasure to introduce Terry to the various leaders of Iraq, including former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, current Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, President Jalal Talabani, President Masoud Barzani, Prime Minister Nachervan Barzani, the former Prime Minister of Kurdistan and the current Minister of Planning Dr. Barham Salih, the National Security Advisor, Mowafak al-Rubaie, and many Sunni leaders in the Parliament and in the country. Terry and I were very concerned about the new Iraqi constitution. We knew that in Islam, both in the Quran and Shari’a Law, if a Muslim converts to another religion, he is called an infidel and given three opportunities to repent. If he doesn’t respond, he is to be killed by any means possible.

Terry boldly petitioned these leaders to include religious freedom in the new constitution, according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. He also sponsored a petition drive in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom asking Westerners like himself to sign documents urging the leaders of my country to guarantee the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in our new constitution.

In August 2005 when the initial draft of the constitution was issued, there was no mention of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Apparently our visit had great impact because two months later when the final document was ratified by the people, the verbiage declared that the constitution of Iraq would honor all human rights agreements signed by previous Iraqi governments. Iraq was an original signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

Iraq’s constitution now guarantees religious freedom. The 27 million people of my country now have this right and God used my friend, Terry Law, to help make it possible. Thank you, Terry.
