Inside was the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen. It had one large cushion surrounded by smaller diamonds. It wasn’t too large or flashy but more than I’d ever imagined. I put my hand to my mouth as tears pooled in my eyes.
“Do you like it?” he asked.
“Yes, I love it.”
Zane looked at Mila, and she gave him a nudge. “Tara, you’re an incredible woman, and you’ve been a fantastic mother figure and partner. We love you, and I’d love it if you’d be my wife.”
“Will you marry my Daddy?” asked Mila. “And be my new mom for real?”
I was surrounded by love, and the ring felt like it was where it had always wanted to be. “Yes, I love you both so much, of course, I will marry you.”
Mila cheered and ran around in circles as Zane hugged me and pulled me up out of the bed to spin me around in his arms. “I’m so happy,” he said. “I’ve wanted to ask you for a while, but Mila wanted to make it special.”
“It’s special because you’re both here, and you both want me.”
“We love you, baby.” He held me close, and I wiped away my tears. “Now, my mother can finally pull out all of those bridal mags she’s been hoarding over the past year.”
“She has magazines?”
“She bought the first one after you moved in. She’s been hoping you’d let her help plan the wedding.”
“Of course, I will.”
“And me too,” said Mila. “I want to be in the wedding too!”
“Of course, you can,” I said.
“Looks like we have some plans to make,” said Zane. “Are you happy?”
“I’m more than happy.” It was the best time of my life. Not only did I have a beautiful daughter to be, but Zane’s love was everything.
