  Chapter Ten

Jax awoke sometime in the gray hours of the morning. He reached beside him, but all he felt was empty bed.

  Not again.

He sat up in bed just as the bathroom door opened. Golden walked back into the bedroom, his stare connecting with Jax’s.

“I thought you’d left again,” Jax said, embarrassed he’d just admitted that aloud.

Golden shook his head. “Just a trip to pee.” Golden slid back into the bed and into Jax’s arms.

It surprised Jax how good it felt for Golden to be there. Although a little part of him wasn’t surprised at all.

“I never got a chance to tell you some news,” Golden said after a moment.

  “What’s that?”

“Apparently my grandmother had five million stashed in a secret bank account.”

“What? That can’t be. She pinched every penny. I mean, the house was falling apart around her.”

“I thought the exact same thing. There’s a safe deposit box as well. I’m hoping to find something that explains it all in there.” Golden got quiet. “Regardless, I can’t take the money. You, Linc, and Colt were there for her more than I was. You deserve it more.”

“I don’t want your money. She wanted you to have it, so you should.”

“After I didn’t come to see her? Taking that money would be disrespectful.”

“Yet the same thing could be said for not taking it. She wanted you to have it. It’s her gift to you.” Jax lay there for a moment, still stunned at the news. “Or you could do something special in her name. Charity work. You’re an attorney, you could figure all that out, I’m sure.”

Jax could feel Golden smiling against his chest.

“Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Help others with the money. I’d feel better doing that than keeping it.”

Jax was thoughtful a moment. “I’m sorry, you know.”

  “For?”

“The things I said to you when we first met. I was as much of as ass, as much as I thought you were.” The fact Golden didn’t want the money spoke volumes about the man’s character. Jax knew bad things happened to good people. Emotions had separated a grandmother and grandson, but maybe there was some good that could still come from it.

  It already was.

Jax held Golden tighter. “So you’ll be here through Monday. For the bank?”

“Yeah. I have to get back to the office to clean up some messes.”

  “Messes?”

“Long story. Basically my partner ran off to get married and isn’t coming back. I’ve got to work through her files or find a new partner. I really should work this weekend, but I suddenly don’t feel like working.”

Jax smiled and leaned down to kiss Golden, his cock already hard and ready for more. “Me either.”

Jax sank into Golden’s body, insatiable.

Something told him he’d never stop being insatiable.

  * * * *

“Stocks?” Golden glanced inside the stack of weathered old papers from inside the deposit box. “There’s got to be another couple of million here.”

A small white envelope dropped from the stack onto the floor. Jax leaned down to get it, handing it over to Golden.

His grandmother’s handwriting. Golden’s name was scrawled across the front. He quickly opened it, curiosity killing him.

  Dear Golden –

How I have missed you over the years. I tried for years to be a part of your life, but your father refused. By the time you grew, it seems your father’s hatred of me kept you from coming to see me. The fact you’re reading this now more than likely means I’ve passed and left everything to you, including this box.

Hopefully you will learn how much I loved you. I was banned from your home, your father would not allow me to see you. I sent you letters, but they were all returned to me, unopened. The stack of them is inside this safe deposit box, so you can see I never stopped loving you.

I was not perfect. Nor was your father. We said ugly things in the heat of anger after your mother died, things I could never get him to forgive. Because of my mistake, I lost out in seeing my only grandson grow.

I wish things could’ve been different, but if you learn the truth, that I never stopped loving you and wanted to be a part of your life, then I can rest in peace.

The money in the account in this bank was awarded to the beneficiary of your mother’s life insurance. She’d never changed it over to your father or you, and your father refused to take it, calling it blood money. I left it here in this account all these years, waiting for you.

I slowly bought the bonds for you, to help pay for your college, or so I hoped. Do something special with the money and your life.

Lastly, there are several photo albums in my trunk at the foot of my bed. They’re filled with pictures of your mother growing up. Some of them are you with her and your father. I thought you’d want those especially.

  With All My Love,

  Your grandmother

  Deloris

Golden re-read the letter again before handing it to Jax. Jax took it as Golden reached into the box and pulled out the thick stack of returned letters. Each were made out to him, with a hasty return to sender scrawled across the front in his father’s near illegible hand.

  “Are you okay?” Jax asked.

Golden nodded. “I am. More than okay. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.” A moment of panic hit him. “I assume you threw out my Gran’s stuff?”

“Not hardly. It’s all in storage in the shed beside the garage out back. I knew you’d change your mind one day.”

Golden stared at Jax, not even knowing how to thank the man. He reached out and squeezed Jax’s arms, words failing him.

Jax smiled, nodding his understanding. “Now you know the money is most certainly yours. You can do whatever you want with it now.”

Golden shook his head. “I still like the charity idea. I need to think it over.”

Jax smiled widely. “You are most definitely different than I first assumed.”

Golden leaned in and kissed Jax. “Hopefully that’s a good thing.”

“You know it is. Better than good.”

Jax leaned in and kissed Golden deeply. Need swamped Golden. After as many times as they’d had sex over the weekend, it was impossible Golden wanted more.

  Yet he did.

“I’m supposed to go back to the office today,” Golden whined, drawing away from Jax for a moment, only to return to kissing him seconds later.

“Are you?” Jax asked between kisses.

  “Maybe tomorrow. Let’s go home.”

  Jax’s wide stare met Golden’s.

“I like the sound of that,” Jax said lowly.

  Home.

It did sound unbelievably good. “Yeah. Me, too.”
