  What’s next from Penny Reid?

Beard in Mind, Book #4 in the Winston Brothers series

  Keep it simple.

  Easy.

  Fun.

  That’s Beau Winston’s motto.

Another favorite, There’s plenty of fish in the sea, because Beau loves everything about fishing. Keeping it simple has worked well for him. He is everyone’s favorite Winston Brother, and that’s a fact.

Well… it used to be a fact.

  Before her.

Before his brother hired this human-porcupine hybrid to work at their auto shop. Shelly Sullivan would rather converse with her foul-mouthed parrot and cuddle dogs than interact with an actual human being. It doesn't take long before Beau wants her antagonistic bird and her prickly personality gone, simple as that.

The only problem is, learning why this porcupine wears her spikes opens a Pandora’s box of complexity—exquisite, tempting, heartbreaking complexity—and Beau Winston soon discovers keeping it simple might mean missing out on what matters most.

  Coming August 1, 2017!

  A Note from the Author

If you’ve read any of my books, you know I enjoy weaving current events, unresolved ethical issues/questions, and shenanigans into the stories. My characters are always different people at the beginning of the story than they are at the end of it, because I take them (and you) on a journey of discovery.

The idea for this book was borne out of discussions with my single female friends, who have often lamented the quality of single men they’ve encountered. One of my recently married friends, when she was single, would frequently argue, “It took me seven years to find a car I actually like driving. What makes me think I’ll find a life partner in less than that?”

One evening I posed the question: if you could replace a human companion with something else, would you? The responses I received were as varied as the women themselves.

I hope you enjoyed Marie and Matt’s adventure. ❤

  Orgasm Meditation

As far as I know, there is no company called Single Sense that teaches OM. But there is a company named One Taste that trains people how to conduct OM (orgasm meditation). I used the text from their website—word for word—to describe the procedure/act/purpose of OM in chapter 6.

  Cuddling

The Cuddle Sutra is a real book (proper title: The Cuddle Sutra: An Unabashed Celebration of the Ultimate Intimacy). I bought it for research (for Dating-ish) and my husband and I tried out several of the poses. We found it to be really sweet. I recommend it to try with your partner (or companion robot).

However, the website and studio described in Dating-ish (CuddleBuddies.com) were both fictional. Sadly, my husband didn’t want me to visit a real cuddle salon and I respected his wishes.

There are a few companies that do offer to pair clients with professional cuddlers, which are below:

  ROBOTS!!

All the other robots and AI mentioned in this book (the Japanese nurse robot, etc.) other than Matt’s prototype are all real. None of them were made up . . .

DeepMind (Google) was—for me—the most fascinating of the AI projects I researched. Specifically, this article: http://uk.businessinsider.com/google-deepmind-aggressive-gameplay-2017-2?r=US&IR=T

I could likely spend the next 30 or so pages waxing on and on about AI, robotics, and the ethical issues surrounding automation, but I won’t. I like you all too much.

  ‘Til next time.
