Nail on the Head (Detective Kate Rosetti Mystery Book 5) Page 23

by Gina LaManna

  “When will it be?”

“We decided on a Christmas wedding.”

“Oh. Well, that’s not exactly a long engagement, but it’s something,” I said with a smile. “I’m glad you got it sorted. Are you happy with the outcome?”

Gem breathed deeply. “Yes, I think so. We’re going to communicate more, really do this together. I think that’s what’s been missing.”

“That’s good. I’m glad you guys are figuring things out.”

“Me too,” Gem agreed. “Though she wasn’t exactly happy when she found out it was a conversation with you that prompted my chat with her.”

  “Why?”

Gem shrugged. “I don’t know. Jealousy, maybe.”

“There’s nothing to be jealous of. I don’t understand why people are finding that so hard to believe.”

“I’m sorry if I upset Jack the other night.”

“He’s fine,” I said. “We talked about it.”

  “Is he still in town?”

I shook my head. “He and Agent Brody had to get back to DC. They’ve got some red tape to deal with at the FBI what with the shooting and all. Then there’s Flystone’s new and improved confession that’s opening up some old case files. Not to mention, that’s just how things work with us. Jack comes in town for a few days and then goes home.”

  “You sound depressed.”

“I hate seeing him go,” I said. “I just don’t see how we can be together with our respective careers.”

“Well, at some point you must have thought it could work.”

  “Why do you say that?”

Gem shrugged. “Why would you have gotten into a relationship with him in the first place if you knew it was doomed?”

  “For fun?”

“You know how to have fun?”

  “You’re hilarious.”

“I’m just saying, I think somewhere deep down, you want it to work.”

I wrinkled my nose in thought. “That doesn’t help me figure out how we’re supposed to get there.”

“Has he offered to compromise? Move closer to you?”

“He’s mentioned it, but it’s nothing concrete. We’re both wishy washy on the subject.”

“There’s no rush to move to the next step.”

“Says the guy who’s getting married in less than three months.”

“Touché,” Gem said with a smile. “I hope you’ll still be a part of the wedding.”

“Am I actually invited? Or will Mindy look at me like I have two heads again?”

“Your presence is required,” he said with a wink. “Mindy knows that.”

  “She’s okay with it?”

  “Coming around to it.”

“I thought we were okay, she and I,” I said. “I mean, the last time I talked to her, everything seemed to be pretty cordial.”

“I blame it on the wedding stress. Everything is making her a little bit on edge now. Even she admits it. She apologized to me for how she’s been acting.”

“It sounds like you’re all set to get married.” I stopped walking and faced Gem. The leaves rustled around us, the fall air fresh and crisp and lovely. “Congratulations. I really am happy for you.”

“Thank you, Detective.” His smile shone back at me. “You’ll figure things out, Kate. You always do.”
