Dark Space Universe (Book 3): The Last Stand Page 26

“But you don’t even know me!” Tyra objected.

“I don’t need to. You’re married to my son, and he loves you. That’s good enough for me.”

  “But...”

“Consider it a late wedding present,” Alara said.

Tyra looked away, speechless, back to the pool and the sprawling grounds around the home. The first floor of the house wrapped around the pool in two separate wings, each of them big enough to be a three bedroom home all by itself. Tall green trees waved around the property, their leaves rustling in the wind.

Tyra had worked so hard her whole life to have a place like this, and here it was being handed to her free of charge.

“Lucien explained what happened, how you lost your home on Astralis,” Ethan said, speaking into the silence. “We wanted to help you get back what you lost. But if you don’t like this home, you and Lucien are free to go pick another one together.”

Tyra turned back to him and shook her head, blinking tears. “No. This is perfect. I don’t know what to say... thank you,” she managed.

Ethan grinned and nodded. “Don’t mention it.”

“We’re going to live here?” Atara asked, her eyes huge.

  “That’s right,” Lucien said.

“Yippee! Can I go swimming? Please, please, pleaaase!”

“We can go together,” Ethan said before anyone else could reply.

Atara grabbed his hand and dragged her grandfather toward what looked like an elevator or stairwell rising from the center of the roof.

Ethan had to run to keep up with his granddaughter, and everyone laughed at the comical picture of a five-year-old dragging a grown man behind her.

“Wait for us!” Lucien said. He grabbed Tyra’s hand, and ran after them. Tyra just smiled, her heart bursting with joy. Us. They were an us again. Not just her and Lucien, but Atara, Brak, Ethan, Alara... all of them. Everyone was back together; the ones who’d died were all back from the dead, and without even the memory of their deaths to weigh them down. It was a miracle, and they had just one person to thank.

Tyra lifted her eyes skyward, and smiled. Thank you, Etherus.

The jury was still out on exactly what Etherus was, but at least there could no longer be any doubt about who he was: he was definitely good, and that was good enough for her.
