Breathe Again Page 10

by Sydney Logan

I thank him, and the three of us walk back to the car. It’s a gorgeous afternoon, so we find ourselves taking our time, enjoying the warm summer day. I’m admiring the blue, clear sky when Josh suddenly stops.

  “Carrie . . .”

  I look around.

We’re standing on the Hart Street Bridge.

Tears fill my eyes as my husband—with our sleeping son in his arms—walks over to the concrete barrier and gazes down at the water. He’s not standing close enough to cause me to panic, but it’s close enough to remind me of how far we’ve come.

I walk up next to him and slide my arm around his waist.

Josh pulls me close. “You saved me.”

  “You saved me, too.”

Our circumstances couldn’t have been more different, but that night, we’d been just the same. Two lost, heartbroken souls, desperate for salvation.

It was one moment in time, and in that split second, our lives changed forever.

I’m learning that life is full of those little moments. Joyful moments. Heartbreaking moments. Moments that are inconsequential. And others that take your breath away. Some moments you create. Others just find you.

  In a greasy diner.

  On a snowy bridge.

Three years later, you find yourselves standing together, with your son snoring on his father’s shoulder, and your second child growing inside you.

And in that moment, you find that you can truly breathe again.

When I first started writing this book, it wasn’t a deeply personal story. It wasn’t based on actual events, and it didn’t resemble my private life in any way.

That all changed by the time I finished it.

The details are different, but like Carrie says in the story, grief is universal. It’s a personal journey and an emotional roller coaster that seemingly never ends. But somehow, life goes on, and you have to find your own path to peace. If you’ve ever lost someone you love, I hope you’ve found that. And if you haven’t, please know I’m right there with you, trying to make sense of it all.

Still, I’m hopeful. And I’m grateful.
