“Now, someone explain to me the difference between persuasive writing and informative writing?” I asked the class.

All hands went up, so I called on one of my students that never spoke. Sara, who was surprisingly into this project, answered it correctly and I explained why we did the project instead of just reading about the topic. I wanted them to see it, be it, and believe it. Once everyone finished, I dismissed the class and Matthews left talking with several students. I did not know if he wanted something or not, but I figured he would fire me on another day.

The next day, Matthews came into my classroom within the last five minutes of my last period, which was shocking because that class ended at 9:15 PM. Why was he here so late? He sat on the side again, but I did not bother to introduce him since I was literally dismissing them at that point. I finished my final words and the class dispersed. He waved and gave pounds to a few students on their way out. I watched him as he stayed back after everyone left, “To what do I owe this pleasure?” I inquired with a plastered smirk on my face.

Matthews exhaled, “Look, I think we got off on the wrong foot the other day, and I just wanted to clear the air.”

I started putting my files in my bag, “I think we were both perfectly clear the other day. You have a job to do and so do I, until I don’t. Until then, we will both do our jobs.”

Matthews rose from his chair and sauntered towards me. He had on a shark skinned three-piece tailored suit with a burgundy striped shirt that did wonders for his complexion. Damn, the man did look good, even at 9:00 PM in the evening. Quickly turning to keep from ogling him, I started to erase the whiteboard. “Why are you such a… -” he began to say before I cut him off.

“Bitch?” I interjected for him. “The same reason you are.”

He moved closer, “Imara, you work for me, where do you get off disrespecting me as if we are on the same level? I sign your paycheck, I’m the reason you still have this class.”

My anger boiled over. I dropped the eraser and slowly turned towards him, “What do you want, a cookie? I don’t owe you anything. I was here before you. You come in here like you are God’s gift to FRU but you’ll be gone in two years. The morale has dropped and while the students may love you, the staff do not. You are probably the most feared and hated leader since Michelle Rhea. Congratulations on that.” We continued to glare at each other. “Nobody cares that you like to go around on a bullhorn to hear yourself talk!” I turned my back to him, then bent down to get the eraser off the floor. “Many of us lowly staff members think it over-compensation, for what I will not divulge to the likes of you. Who knows how many sticks you have up…”

  Something touched me.

When I turned around he was so close to me, I could feel the hair on my arms and the back of my neck, standing straight up. When I turned around to see just what the hell was going on, his hand moved to my hip, then he pulled me towards him and kissed me.

  What in the hell?

To my shame, I stood on my toes to kiss him back. His lips, his hands and his overall presence invaded all of my good judgment and we kissed and kissed. A noise outside the classroom and down the hall brought me back to reality. I pushed him away, adjusted my skirt, gathered my bag and purse to leave. All while saying, “I suspect you want a cookie now. Do I need to thank you for that as well?”

He smiled but I smirked at him and turned to leave.

“Goodnight, Dictator Matthews.” I jubilantly sang as the door closed.
