  Afterword

The book referenced in the very last chapter of Midnight Labyrinth is The Day Boy and the Night Girl by Scottish fantasy writer George MacDonald. When I started reading MacDonald’s The Princess and the Goblin as a child, I had no idea he was a pioneer in fantasy literature. I just knew I liked stories with princesses who did things and that MacDonald and his collection of fairy tales fed my imagination.

The Day Boy and the Night Girl is a wonderful story with themes exploring light and dark that have carried into my work to this day and seemed particularly fitting for Ben and Tenzin. I highly recommend it.

  Failing grades. Misleading wind vampires.

And a fortune in forgotten gold.

Traveling to the most remote region of China certainly wasn’t what Ben Vecchio had in mind for his summer vacation, but when Tenzin suggested a quick trip, he could hardly turn down a chance to keep her out of trouble and practice the Mandarin he still struggled with in class.

Of course, Tenzin might not have been clear about everything travel entailed.

Driving a truck full of rotting vegetables and twenty million in gold from Kashgar to Shanghai was only the start. If Ben can keep the treasure away from grasping immortals, the reward will be more than worth the effort. But when has travel with a five-thousand-year-old wind vampire ever been simple?

  Acknowledgments

First off, I want to thank every one of my longtime readers who were wonderful and weird enough to think: “Hmm, five-thousand-year-old vampire and twenty-five-year-old human dude partnering up to hunt for treasure and stuff? Yeah, I can dig it.” THANK YOU for getting why I love these characters so much and for being willing to jump onto this ride for a while. Thank you also for your patience. The Elemental series started out with four books, but it soon grew to be a world that encompassed so many different storylines. It feels great to start fresh with these characters.

And to all you new readers who also thought that Midnight Labyrinth sounded like your jam, thank you too! I hope you’ll check out some of the other books I’ve written in this world, but if you want to just stick with Ben and Tenzin, that’s cool too. Welcome!

This book is a little bit of a love letter to New York City. Though I didn’t grow up there, NYC has always welcomed me. I’ve never felt like a tourist. Some of that is thanks to all the wonderful friends I’ve made who live there, but some of that is just the character of that crazy, diverse, all-hours-a-day city. New York, I love your energy. I love your style. I love your noisy streets and your quiet corners. When I thought about settling Ben and Tenzin in a new place, you were the first and only choice.

I want to thank my friends who offered particular insight to the city, particularly Denise Cataudella; and my one and only Scottish Profanity Beta, Cat Bowen. Many thanks to the keen eyes of RJ Blain and Mel Sterling, as well as so many other encouraging author friends. Amy Cissell, Colleen Vanderlinden, April White, Grace Draven, Penny Reid, and so many others. Thanks for being part of this fabulous indie publishing tribe. You are my people.

Thanks to my marvelous editing team, Heather Kinne, Anne Victory, and Linda. Thanks for all the work you do to help me get better with every book. You are so very appreciated.

Thanks to my assistants, Jenn and Gen. You are marvelous and I’m getting you matching capes.

Thanks to the staff and artists at Damonza.com who are both consummate professionals and extraordinary artists. You captured my vision for this book cover and were such a pleasure to work with.

Thanks to my family, especially Colin and David, my two best guys. Thanks to my mom and dad, who make so many things possible. Thanks to my canine assistants, Mac and Charlie, for having the generosity to let me feed you, clean up after you, and occasionally snuggle.

Thanks to God, who makes all things possible, especially the peace that passes understanding.

Life is unpredictable, but I’m happy to be going along on this ride with people I love and admire. Thanks for joining me.
