“It was me, Gerald.”Father Adrian said.“It was me. I abandoned you. I forgot about you and I was the one who let you die.”He stepped closer to the bed.

  “Father?”I asked.

“You’ve killed these innocent people, Gerald, when it was all my fault.”he said, stepping closer again. Pressing the crucifix toward Gerald, he slid his bloody hand around to his back and gripped the hilt of the dagger. His blood ran down onto the shimmering, silver blade.

“Let her go, Gerald.”He was calmer that time.“Just let her go. It’s me you want. I let you die.”His voice ramped up and I hid behind Sandra’s chair.“Take me!”Father shouted. Gerald’s anger was palpable. His shadowy strands of evil were massing into a glob of pulsing madness.

“I let you die!”Father shouted again.“I wanted you to die!”

The monster roared, throwing Sandra across the room. She was alive, but just barely. I hurried to her with a shielding blanket.

The demon rushed at Adrian, full evil rage in its voice. The Father drew the blood-soaked dagger from his belt held it out next to the cross.

“God commands you back to hell, unholy demon!”he charged the monster, dagger raised high and ready to strike.

They clashed in the center of the room in a blinding light of dark blue; an explosion that threw everything against the walls and shook the entire building. Adrian shoved the blade deep into the demonic blackness that seemed to swallow him whole.

“Almighty God commands you!”he yelled one last time. The demon roared in unison. Their voices echoed through the forest, scattering the wildlife in all directions.

The reverberations seem to last a lifetime before they finally settled. Everything quieted and the entire world went quiet. I was still holding Sandra so tight, I thought I was crushing her. The last debris fell to the floor before I finally opened my eyes.

The entire room was destroyed; all four walls were blown away, leaving only the door frame standing. Where Sandra’s bed had been was Father Adrian’s dying body. There was no sign of Gerald anywhere. Father sputtered blood and coughed his last few breaths.

“He’s gone.”Father said, rolling his head to us. His fading eyes smiled one last time.“I’m sorry.”

With that, Father Adrian died. Sandra was unconscious but breathing. I was badly injured by flying glass, but I was okay. The monster was gone and hopefully Gerald could finally rest. The guilt was gone and Sandra would be my friend for a little while longer.

  THE END.
