The Keepers: Homeward IV Page 5

“What would you say if I told you the keep was now safe,” he said, “that my mother and I have made it so?”

She looked at him skeptically, but took another step. “Folks here are laying bets on how long it takes before you all go running.”

He shook his head. “We aren’t going anywhere.” Then he pointed to his horse. “But I have an errand that may take some time, and my mother could use some help and some company. I swear the keep is safe now, and she’ll pay you a good wage.” He paused. “She and I… we like to have people around. We like company. Will you go?”

She was close enough now that he could see her eyes were blue. “You’re really not afraid to be there?” she asked. “You swear it’s safe?”

“It’s safe. Will you go and talk to my mother?”

  Finally, she nodded, “I’ll go.”

  He smiled and then sighed.

For better or worse, he and his family were now the keepers of Chemestúk Keep.
