Chapter1
Hannah was sitting on the floor, unpacking the last of the boxes. She placed books she and Cas had accumulated over their time together, on the shelves. She stood back with her hands on her hips to determine how everything looked. She let out a long sigh and smiled. She couldn’t believe all of the chaos the move had entailed but she was more than glad it was over. Everything was in its rightful place and unpacked. The next step was to go shopping for the various things they were missing. She took one last lingering look at all of their belongings and then threw the last box into the large pile of empty ones. She smiled softly and readied herself to leave the house.
She couldn’t believe her and Cas had moved in together. She still found it weird and they’d been there a week so far.
She and Cas have been together for almost two years now. Everything with him seemed like a fairytale; the more they were together, the more in love with him she was. Everything always seemed new and sparkly: she couldn’t help but still let her stomach swoop and her heart leap when he was around. He was just that kind of guy. She couldn’t get her mind off him – not that she would want to. She loved being around him and doing this with him; she loved every minute of it.
When Cas told her he had a job offer in a small town two hours away from the city she wondered what this would mean for them. But then he asked her to move with him and she dropped everything to be with him. It wasn’t like there was anything for her in the city, she didn’t have many friends, just Michelle. She lost her family and didn’t particularly like her job. She jumped at the chance at new opportunities and, frankly, she loved him so how could she say no? So they moved in together and everything has been going smoothly. Even after two years, they were still in their honeymoon phase, she still felt the warmth of butterflies in her belly when she saw him. One of her favorite moments of the day was always when Cas came home to a hot meal she’d prepared and discussed their days. She knew living with him will strengthen their bond.
She had yet to find a job in the tiny town so instead, she’d readied their house, cleaned and cooked. She didn’t mind, although she knew after awhile she’d have to look for something. And, so far, she really liked the town. The people were nice and friendly. The shops were cute and antique-looking. She liked the vibe of the town and she looked forward to getting to know more people and being part of the life here.
Hannah finished readying herself, grabbed her keys and phone before leaving the house. Her purse was securely strapped around her arm and she smiled as she stepped outside into the bright light. She looked over at her car in the driveway and surveyed her surroundings before deciding to walk to the store instead. There was a cool summery breeze in the air. She had gone grocery shopping the day before and was already thinking about their meal for that night. When she decided to move, she promised herself she would try new things and wouldn’t let anything hold her back. And now, she had a boyfriend and house: two new things.
She walked slowly to the store, taking in the town charm. Never before had she been around a community like this and she loved it. She looked forward to living there indefinitely and hoped Cas liked it as much as she did. He said he did, but sometimes he had a tendency to say things to make her happy and not consider himself but since moving in, they’d agreed to try working on it.
“Good morning!” Hannah said, smiling as she reached the small local supermarket.
The girl behind the counter smiled politely at her, Hannah found her quite interesting: she had bright red curls. Hannah grabbed a small basket and began going up and down the aisles looking for what she needed. When she got to the feminine products section, she frowned trying to remember when the last time she’d had her period. It had been so crazy moving and getting settled that she couldn’t remember. She figured it was just stress messing her cycle up and placed a box into the cart. She moved further down the aisle and came upon the pregnancy test section. She gently brushed her fingers over her belly in thought. She hadn’t gotten her period, that was true, but that didn’t mean she was pregnant. Besides her and Cas were careful and she was pretty sure werewolves couldn’t have children. She just figured.
Hannah sighed and rolled her eyes at her ridiculousness. She wasn’t pregnant. She was just stressed from the move, she told herself. As she finished and went over to the counter she looked back down the feminine products section. Impulsively, she went back and grabbed a pregnancy test. Just to prove to herself she wasn’t pregnant, she thought.
The girl gave her another polite smile when she saw the test.
“Are you new to town?” the girl asked while bagging everything.
“Just moved here.” Hannah said, smiling.
“Cool. You’re the doctor’s wife?” the girl asked.
“Girlfriend actually, but yeah.”
“Cool.” The girl said finishing up and gave her a small smile.
“Have a good day.” Hannah said, before taking her bags and walking back to the house.
Chapter2
Once Hannah was home, she put the various items away until the last thing to put away was the pregnancy test. She stared at it for a few minutes debating what to do, when she finally decided to pick it up and read the directions. She was impatient now and wanted to make sure she wasn’t pregnant. She heavily doubted it, but she wanted to make sure nevertheless. It was pretty easy. Pee on a stick and then wait to see.
Hannah went to the bathroom to take the test and then put her phone on a timer. She waited for a full three minutes until her phone went off signaling the test was finished. She gulped nervously and picked the white stick up. She gasped and dropped the test to the floor in shock, when she saw the tiny pink cross. She stared at the floor not knowing what to do. She couldn’t believe that this was happening. Never in a million years did she think that she wou
ld be pregnant. Sure, she had thought one day, but not today. She put a hesitant hand to her stomach and looked. There was a child growing inside her? She was pregnant?
Her first thought was that it was a mistake. So she took the other three tests in the box but they all came back positive, too. She sat on the edge of the tub, frightened and wondering what she was going to do. She wasn’t married. Cas was a good man but would he stay with her? Did he even want kids? They had, had that discussion once but he hadn’t been very forthcoming with his opinion on the matter. He didn’t mind them, he said, but he didn’t exactly seem to want them. She started to panic, wondering if he’d leave her; if she’d end up having doing this by herself. She put her head in her hands wondering how she was even going to break it to him – they were only dating. He had just started his own practice. She was sure he didn’t want a child. She wasn’t even sure she wanted a child. Her hand flew back to her abdomen; or maybe she did. The first thing she had to do was tell Cas.
She got up slowly, gathering the tests and putting them in a bag. She tied it securely and went downstairs. She glanced at the clock on her way down. It read four o’clock; Cas would be home by five thirty. She began the dinner she had planned earlier. The only problem was, she couldn’t concentrate on cooking. All she could think about was Cas and the pregnancy. The whole idea made her head ache. All too soon, she heard his car in the driveway and began to scramble to set the table and finish the meal.
“Honey, I’m home!” Cas called jovially.
“Hi.” She called back nervously stirring the soup. She reached to grab the salt and spilled the salad dressing.
“Something smells good.” He said, coming into the kitchen.
She smiled weakly at him while he gave her a dazzling smile. She was still unsure as to how she’d gotten so lucky. Granted, he was a werewolf, but he’d saved her on numerous occasions and he was only furry a few days out of the month, so it wasn’t all bad. He was a doctor, he was gorgeous and he loved her. She thanked her lucky stars for whatever she’d done in a past life that allowed her to be with him now. She knew she’d never meet a better man, but that didn’t stop her from being nervous about telling him what she’d found out that day.
He went over and wrapped his arms around her, bringing her as close as possible. He kissed her hard on the lips and then looked over at the meal she was preparing.
“Looks good too.” He mumbled leaning down to kiss her again.
She gave him another weak smile and then wiggled out of his arms to continue cooking. Except, she kept knocking things over in her nervousness.
“I’m sorry.” She mumbled as she knocked another container over filled with seasonings.
Cas frowned as he began to clean it up. “Are you OK? You seem…nervous.” He said watching as she moved around the kitchen quickly. He noticed she didn’t look at him and when he kissed her she’d barely kissed him back.
“I’m fine.” she said dumping some seasoning into the chicken she was preparing.
“You don’t seem fine.” he said, watching as she moved from the stove to the sink and back.
She definitely wasn’t looking at him.
“Well I am. How about you set the table, I’m almost done.” She said, wanting to get him out of the kitchen. He leaned against the counter and crossed his arms watching as she rushed around.“Something’s wrong…” he said as she reached to get some dishes and shoved them into his chest. He smirked at her and she gave him a pointed look.
“Please set the table.” She said going back to cooking.
He huffed and rolled his eyes before going to put the dishes down.
“So are you going to tell me what happened?” he asked from the dining room. She ignored him as she put the finishing touches on the meal and then took them out into the dining room.
“My day was good. Thanks for asking.” He said dryly watching her as she took each dish into the dining room. She continued to ignore him until everything was ready on the table. She then sat down across from him and he followed suit, watching her warily.
“Are you going to tell me?” he asked again as she helped herself to some food.
She sighed and put her fork down. “I…do have to tell you something.” She said reluctantly. He waited patiently for her to continue.
“Are you going to eat?” she asked gesturing to the food.
He shook his head, “Not till you tell me what you need to. What happened?” he asked, the humor in his voice was gone and all he could think was the worst. Was she cheating on him? Did someone harass her? Was she going to leave him?
“I…want to eat first. You should eat.” She said quietly nodding to his plate.
He narrowed his eyes at her and sat back. “Just tell me.” She stared at him instead of answering. His anger was flaring and his dark thoughts worsened. “Are you cheating on me?” he blurted out. She crinkled her forehead and shook her head, “What? No! How could you…No!” she said angrily.
“Then what? Are you leaving me? What’s going on? Why are you—“
“I’m pregnant, OK! I’m pregnant!” she yelled throwing her fork down in anger.
Cas stared at her wide-eyed. No one said anything for a few minutes as both of them tried to avoid each other’s gaze. They stared at each other for what felt like forever until Cas finally broke the spell and cleared his throat uncomfortably.
“Pregnant?” he rasped in awe.
“Yeah…” she mumbled looking down at her plate.
“So…pregnant?” he asked again.
She nodded not wanting to look at him.
“How…I mean…are you sure?” he asked fidgeting nervously.
“I took like three tests. I can go into the office with you tomorrow and we can find out if you want.” She mumbled playing with the fork in her hand.
He nodded, “Yeah. That would be…good.”
They sat in silence, neither one of them wanting to eat anything.
“If you are….what do you want to do?” he asked quietly.
She looked up and thought about how she’d wondered that earlier.
“I wanna keep it.” She whispered biting her bottom lip.
He nodded and reached across the table to take her hand. “Me too.” He said, giving her a weak smile before helping himself to some of the meal she cooked. She nodded and tried to eat, but she couldn’t taste the food. She was too nervous. Too scared. She didn’t know what to expect. Cas hadn’t taken it the way she was thinking he would. All afternoon she had daydreamed how it would go, from storming out, to embracing her, to proposing to her. But none of them had included total and complete silence.
“What do you think?” she asked, finally giving up on eating.
“I honestly I don’t really have any opinion until tomorrow.” He said trying to be nonchalant.
She frowned. “But what if I am? What are we going to do?” she asked.
“What do you mean?”
“I just mean, what are we going to do?”
He narrowed his eyes at her, wondering exactly what she was trying to say. “I guess I’ll continue working and you’ll continue doing what you want. We’ll just have a baby, too.” He said shrugging.
Her frown deepened. “I mean between us.” She said.
“What do you mean between us? I thought we were fine.”
“We are fine. I’m just saying…I’m just trying to ask whether you’re going to…going to leave.” She finally whispered out the last part.
He scowled at her and finally put his fork down.
“You think that low of me? That I would abandon my own flesh and blood? That I would abandon you?” he asked bewildered by her thought process.
She looked away, feeling ashamed of her thoughts.
“Hannah…I’m not leaving. Not now, not ever. If you are pregnant, we’ll deal with it. We’ll be a unit. A family. We’ll not only have each other, but someone else as well. I love you, what more proof do you need that I won’t leave?” Cas said exas
perated.
She looked up at him and smiled a watery smile. He got up and walked around the table putting her head in his hands.
“I love you, Hannah. Don’t let anything ever make you think otherwise. You’re it for me, and, if you are pregnant, we’ll just have one more person to worry about. I think it would be wonderful if you were and if you aren’t, then one day we should consider it.”
She nodded, her throat too clogged with emotion. He smiled at her and then kissed her swiftly on the lips before getting up and going to finish his dinner. The rest of their meal paced in calming conversation; neither mentioned the pregnancy, instead they enjoyed each other’s company.
Chapter3
The next morning Cas woke Hannah up earlier than normal. She often took him to work to get a few minutes with each other in the morning. This morning was different, he wanted to make sure she was pregnant, so he wanted her to come in before his patients arrived.
They ate breakfast in a stiff silence, then they drove to the clinic together. Cas held her hand as they drove and didn’t let go until they had gotten into his office where he had to go about his general opening activities. Hannah tried to help but she was too nervous to concentrate until Cas told her to go sit in one of the patient rooms.
Hannah waited in the room impatiently. The crinkly white dress was itchy against her skin and she desperately wanted Cas to hurry up. She was about to leave to go get him when Cas finally appeared. He gave her a charming smile and then sat down wearing his white lab coat over his clothes. She knew he was in doctor mode, not boyfriend mode. She gave him a small smile and then took a deep breath calming herself.
