A Moment of Weakness Page 19

The heat of their kiss sank down into her belly, igniting the deep longing she’d been suppressing for months. Janitor closet or not, she wanted this man, and she wanted him now.

Please don’t make me beg this time!

“I couldn’t help but notice,” he said, his lips still against hers, “you seemed rather tongue tied back there when your students asked how babies were made.” Fingers slipped under the hem of her blouse and traced a hot line around her sides, across her belly, and snapped at the elastic waistband of her flowy skirt. “Do you need a little lesson, Miss Harris?”

Laurel giggled, running her fingers into his hair. “I’m a little distracted right now. I might require a few. You know…so I fully comprehend.”

With a smoothness only he possessed, he hitched up her skirt, smiling against her neck. “As you wish.”

  Epilogue

Shae saluted the judges, and just before she stepped up to the uneven bars, Micah shouted, “You’ve got this, Shae!” To his right, the woman in the salmon pink sweater gave him a side-eye. What? He couldn’t cheer on his daughter in her first ever gymnastics competition? Then he noticed the woman eyeing his tattoos, skimming his body all the way down to his black boots with a wary pinch to her expression.

He rolled his eyes. Whatever. He’d never look like he belonged in suburbia, but there was something to be said for not having to throw out drunk patrons or look over his shoulder every five seconds.

In front of him, Laurel waddled toward him, her eight-month-pregnant belly sticking out in front of her, the single diamond ring catching the light of the sun. He’d endure side-eyes every minute of the day to keep this life the two of them had built together just for her.

She shifted, the variety of sodas and foil-wrapped hot dogs almost spilling.

Hurriedly, Micah stormed down from his seat in the bleachers, scattering a few more of the skittish parents sitting nearby, and removed the sodas from her hands. “I thought you said you were going to the bathroom?”

She smiled shyly, fully aware of the audience of wary parents watching them. “I did, but then I got thirsty and the hot dogs looked so good and—”

Pressing his lips to hers, he silenced her with a kiss. “Jesus, you’re adorable.” She blinked up at him, surprise in her round eyes. He could stare at her all day. “And I will never get tired of the way you look at me when I do that.”

A weak scowl scrunched her face, but the pink that crept into her cheeks gave her embarrassment away. “If my whacky pregnant brain recalls correctly, that’s how this happened,” she said, pointing her eyes in the direction of her belly.

He reached for the hot dogs too. “Which one is mine?”

Quickly, she plucked both hot dogs out of his hand. “Neither,” she said and tried to rush up the bleacher steps with the slowest waddle ever. Laughing, Micah shook his head and followed. It may not have been the life he thought he’d have, but damn it all if this wasn’t the life he wanted.
