“He’ll come round.”
“Not so sure he will. But perhaps it doesn’t matter any more. Mum wants me to move back in with her. She says the house is too large for her on her own.”
“That’s good, isn’t it?”
“It will give me some more options when it comes time to going back to work.”
“You’re not taking your mum up on the offer?”
Lisa shrugged. “It wasn’t part of my plan to run the letting agency. I guess I always assumed Phil would get to take it over when the time came. But Mum really isn’t cut out for it. She’s already threatened two of the staff with the sack. If I let that continue there won’t be a business to take over. Unless… I don’t suppose you fancy a manager’s job? It would help me out.”
“You know I’ll be there to help you with the baby, anytime, just shout. But you don’t want me running a business. Besides, I’ve got some more clients. And Jemma’s school got back to me about a possible opening. I think I’m going to explore that first.”
Lisa smiled. “I guess Dad’s still calling some of the shots for me then.” She sighed and put her hand up to shield her face from the sun. “Perhaps I’ll be a good landlord. Dad never made it look difficult.”
“You’ll be excellent. And just think what security it will give you. It’s a gift, don’t throw it away.”
“I think Mum’s desperate to be a stay at home grannie.”
“Then it’s a win-win.” Judy stood, and held out a hand to Lisa. “Should we get going?”
The letter was waiting for her on the doormat when she got home after dropping Lisa off home. At first, Judy hadn’t noticed the handwritten envelope, mixed up amongst the junk mail and local newspaper, and it was only after she’d switched the kettle on and started to sort the mail that she found it.
She paused, holding the envelope in her hand like it was a sacred object. It was unusual to get any letter with a handwritten address at this time of year. Christmas and Birthday cards were the only time she’d see something like this.
But this was something different. The paper of the envelope was thick and high quality. She could feel the texture rubbing beneath her fingers and let her fingers outline the embossed ‘V’ in the top-left corner. She realised she was holding her breath as she carefully tore it open, lifting the flap and removing a single sheet of paper, the quality as high as the envelope that had contained it.
Gingerly, she unfolded the letter and read.
Judy,
It’s gone too far. I need your help. They’re coming for me.
Seth
And there was an address.
Her heart racing, she put the letter down in front of her on the kitchen counter and considered what she’d just read. It had been five months since she’d had any contact from Seth, and now he had the audacity to ask for help.
Judy picked up the letter again and reread it, making sure there was nothing she’d missed, no more clues to what was troubling Seth. But there was just the envelope and the letter and the words.
I need your help.
Judy picked up her phone and made a call. She wasn’t about to let her friend down. He’d saved her life twice now and it seemed like now was her chance to repay the favour.
