The black wolf watched her turn. It curled its nose up along its snout. It growled and moaned a loud roar inside the barn. It sounded so low. It sounded so awful. It rattled the walls.

Sasha went forward, striking out with her right arm and watched as it impacted the black wolf’s head as it finished its roar.

Jimmy climbed to his feet as the large wolf yelped from the blow. He turned to the table behind him, reached for Rachel, and pulled her to her feet. “We’ve got to go!” He looked down at Brandon on the floor. “Come on!”

Brandon stood to his knees. “That fucking hot chick just turned into a dog.” He climbed to his feet. His eyes started watering. His mind began to explode. He couldn’t think of anything. He had no idea what to do next.

“Let’s go now!” Rachel grabbed Brandon’s left arm, with Jimmy pulling her on her right.

Jimmy turned, looked back to Sasha, and to the black wolf.

The wolf had regained its feet and charged at Sasha.

He was amazed that he could tell them apart. She looked smaller so it helped. Other than her size, they looked the same. They were the same color. They had the same general build. They looked like wolves in every detail, but they were both standing on their hind legs. They both had human looking arms and hands. It was marvelous seeing them like that. He found it hard to take his eyes off them long enough to move.

The larger wolf tackled her from the front and they both went down.

The smaller wolf fell back to her back, crashing towards the far wall.

Jimmy kept his eyes focused to where they were. The doorway that the large black wolf came through was now open. He pulled Rachel, Rachel pulled Brandon, and together, they headed to the door. They made it pass it and back outside.

Jimmy led them to the back of the building and to Rachel’s car. “You have to get out of here.” He pulled her to the driver’s door.

“What about you?” Rachel turned and asked, letting go of Brandon and watched him move towards the trunk.

“I have to go and help her.” Jimmy stopped, turned from her, and headed back to the side of the barn. From there, he could hear their yelping and snarling. They sounded fierce. They sounded incredible. It felt awesome. The sounds made his heart pound. He felt for Sasha, so he had to do something.

“He’ll kill you.” She stood firm. Her mind was set. She wasn’t going to leave him. She hated that he even tried to get her away from him in the first place.

  “I have to do something.”

Brandon caught his breaths. His mind was another story entirely. “What the fuck is going on?” he questioned to everyone at the same time. He sounded shaky. He felt almost like he was about to break down.

“Jimmy?” She called to him as he made it back to the corner of the barn.

Off behind him, Brandon could hear the animals in the barn snarl and growl, with them echoing throughout the area. He had to place his hands onto the trunk of the car to keep himself balanced. He looked to the trunk and heard what sounded like howling coming from the trees behind him. The sounds came so loudly that he nearly collapsed from the fear that they caused him. “Now, what the fuck was that?” He turned and looked to the trees.

Jimmy stopped, hearing the sounds as well. “The others are coming.”

Rachel turned from him and heard the trees come to life on the other side of the barn. “Wait for them to get here Jimmy.” She looked back to him. “They can help you.” With them, they would keep him safe. There was safety in numbers. Even she knew that.

“They might not get here in time.” He turned and made it down the side of the barn and back to the door.

  Rachel bowed her head.

The black wolf was now on top of Sasha. He could see it digging at the front of her chest, tearing her with blood flying all around it. He could hear her yelping. It sounded horrible. It chilled him to his core. He had to do something. He had to help her.

He pulled himself inside the doorway and stopped. “Samuel?” he shouted to the back of the beast.

The black wolf pulled itself off Sasha, and turned back, looking to him behind it. Its face twisted into a growl. Its eyes grew narrow.

Jimmy’s eyes widened. He winced. The sounds of howling came from outside the walls of the barn, and with them, he could tell that the pack was almost there. “It’s too late. The others are on their way.”

The black wolf stood straight. Its ears straightened at the sides of its head as it obviously listened to the sounds.

Jimmy could see that it looked up to the rafters. It hears them. Thank God. He watched it lower its head back to him and look straight at him.

Its bright yellow eyes looked strong. They sparkled, but they also looked dark. It snarled again, turned, and ran to the front of the barn, and he watched it crash through the double doors, blasting a huge hole through it as it disappeared quickly outside.

He finally breathed when he realized that it was now gone. With it, he turned back to Sasha, on the floor, opposite from him.

She already turned back to her human form, and he could see that her pale skin was shining through a strong hint of red that covered her in patches.

He ran to her, and rolled her over in his arms. “Sasha?” He turned her face to his. He looked down to the front of her chest, and could see several large wounds crossing her from the nape of her neck, down through and over her breasts, and to her waist. Her blood was everywhere. The wounds looked deep and unforgiving.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, unable to speak loud enough. The pain that she felt made it almost impossible to talk. Every part of her body burned. Her entire body raked with the pain.

“Sorry.” He held her with his left arm under her shoulders and neck. With his right hand, he wiped her bright red hair from her soft and pale face. “What are you sorry for?” He smiled.

She gasped. Blood came out of her mouth and covered her lips. “I wasn’t strong enough.” Her voice was gurgling some. The blood in her mouth made it difficult for her to breathe.

“You did well.” He smiled again, caressing both sides of her face, one at a time.

Rachel heard the crash. She looked left and saw the black wolf run to the trees from the side of the barn. Seeing it, she looked back to Brandon. “Stay here.”

She left the car and made her way back to the door of the barn, looked inside it and saw Jimmy with Sasha on the floor. He was holding her in his arms just over his knees. Blood was everywhere. With it all, she gasped. “Is she all right?” She stepped through the doorway, and something to her left caught her attention.

A large black wolf stepped through the hole in the wall behind Jimmy, and seeing it, she winced.

Jimmy smelled her and turned. “She’s hurt pretty bad.”

The wolf slowly became smaller as it came back to a more human look. The blackness of its fur faded, and the skin turned white and feminine looking.

They both watched as Marie formed back to herself again.

Jimmy saw her and tears came up in his eyes. “Help her please.” He looked back to Sasha beneath his chin. “There’s so much blood.”

Marie came through the hole with it dwarfing her some, and she stepped towards Sasha’s head. Her naked skin glistened with the light swinging above her. “We heard the fight. We saw the wolf. The others went after it.” She knelt to her knees at Sasha’s head and to Jimmy’s left side.

He watched her kneel to him and turned his attention back to Sasha. “Can you help her?” She saved them. He now had to save her. He needed to. He owed her so much and more.

Marie now had tears in her eyes. Sasha looked terrible. She looked horribly mangled. She knew the truth. “When a wolf attacks another, the wounds are worse than normal.” The tears streaked down her face, falling to her naked breasts. “We can die from such an attack.”

Jimmy turned from Sasha and back to the doorway behind him. He looked straight to Rachel, seeing her there. “Can you help?” He sounded like he was whispering. In fact, he co
uld barely think.

Rachel saw the tears. She looked and could see the blood covering Sasha, but couldn’t see her face.

Marie turned, looking up to her as well. How a human could help her was on her mind.

Rachel saw her tears flowing down her face. Seeing that, seeing them both, she knew that she had to try to do something. She nodded, came into the room and made her way to Sasha’s feet.

The wounds looked deep. She could see that she was also losing a lot of blood. If she was going to do anything, she knew that she had to stop it first. But with what? “Your shirt.” She pointed a trembling hand to Jimmy’s chest.

He nodded, looking back to Marie and nodded to her. “Take her head.”

Marie nodded and took Sasha’s head with both hands.

Free to do so, he sat up some, still on his knees, and pulled his t-shirt up and over his head. Off him, he handed it to Rachel.

She took it and pressed it down to the wounds covering Sasha’s naked chest.

Finished, he placed his hands to the top of his jeans, just above his bent in knees. “Can you help her?” He had to sniffle some with his nose now starting to run.

Rachel looked to him. “I’ll try everything I can. She’s losing a lot of blood.” She nodded.

He heard her fear. He heard her voice crack. He feared both of them.

Brandon heard the ground rustle. He looked around and instantly noticed that he was now alone. He feared that, so he left the car, came up to the doorway, and looked inside the barn. He saw a young woman with long black hair sitting on her knees at Jimmy’s side. He saw Rachel sitting on his right. He could see the dog woman lying in between them. From behind him, he heard running coming towards him, so he turned around and saw two large shadows coming from the trees. He didn’t need to see them to know what they were. They were wolves. They were coming back to get them. He almost felt like he was about to piss his own pants. “Um, guys?” He turned quickly back to the inside of the barn.

“The others have come back.” Marie said without needing to turn. She could smell them clearly.

Brandon heard her and turned back to where the large shadows once were, and saw two naked people, one man and one woman, come out of the trees and towards him. He saw them and just shook his head. “Two naked people are here.” He had nothing else to say.

“Can you help her?” Marie looked to Rachel. Her tear-strewn eyes made it difficult for her to see her face clearly.

Rachel shrugged her shoulders and answered her with a slight smile. “I’m going to try.”

Marie nodded. A human never helped her before. She didn’t know what to say or what to think about that, but this human, this woman, looked willing to help them. The thought intrigued her. It made her have to think, however, this was not the time for it. First, they had to take care of Sasha. They had to get her well. There would be plenty of time to think about everything else, when the time was right.

Markey and Susanna walked towards Brandon.

He watched them come, so he turned and let them pass him into the barn. He could barely even move to do that. He felt helpless. He felt dazed. He watched the two naked people walk to the center of the barn and stop just behind Jimmy.

Marie looked up to the two of them, and could see tears in both of their respective eyes.

Markey and Susanna couldn’t believe what happened. They could think of nothing else to say. “We lost it.” All they could do was cry for their sister. They were helpless to do anything else but that.

Markey and Jimmy carried Sasha up to the house and laid her down on the sofa in the living room. Susanna and Marie went through each room of the house and closed every window and door. Rachel took some towels from the bathroom downstairs, just under the stairs, and asked Brandon to go into the kitchen and fill a pot up with cold water. When he finished, he returned with it back to the living room and set it down to the floor besides the sofa and Rachel.

With it, Rachel was able to begin cleaning the blood from around the wounds. She needed to get a good look at what she had to work on before she could do anything else. Above it all, she hoped that she could do something, but she wasn’t sure if she could.

With his job finished, Brandon walked over to Jimmy, who was now standing at the front door, and stopped right behind him.

He had his back towards him.

The dazed feelings of everything that happened began to clear from his overworked mind, and now, it gave him the time to think. “Werewolves, huh?” he asked his friend, whispering some. He couldn’t believe what he just said, even with everything that he just saw, and it brought everything that happened in on him like mud being squeezed through your hand, draping you with a heavy dose of wet and muck. With it, everything seemed like a dream. Everything seemed out of place. Nothing felt real anymore.

Jimmy chuckled some, watching the trees sway some at the front of the cabin. “Yeah.” All of the smells of mustiness were gone. Whoever the wolf was, it now seemed to be gone with it.

Brandon bowed his head. “That explains a lot, actually.” He smiled.

Jimmy looked from the world outside and back to his friend. “You shouldn’t have come.”

Brandon nodded. “I thought that you had fallen in with a bad crowd.” His smile faded from his face. “I never thought how bad that was.”

Jimmy laughed some at that one. It felt good to do it. It also felt wrong. Too much happened. Too much, he feared had yet to come.

“So you’re one too huh?” Brandon raised his eyebrows up, but kept his chin down.

The look made Jimmy smile. “I guess I am.” He swallowed.

“That Collins guy did this to you?” It made sense. With everything that Jimmy told him earlier, it just did. “Now I know how you got to looking so good. The change was so complete. It makes sense.”

  Jimmy nodded.

Brandon nodded as well. “Oh well.” He turned his head back to the living room. “I did tell you to let out what was in you. I guess,” He turned back to his friend. “You just took that to heart a little too much.” He let out a soft chuckle even though he didn’t feel it. What he actually felt was more like feeling alone. He felt lost. He felt like he didn’t belong. How right he was. He didn’t.

Again, Jimmy nodded, and again, he laughed.

Brandon’s face turned all too serious, all too fast. “So this Samuel guy doesn’t like you much I take it?”

Again, Jimmy nodded. “He didn’t like me coming back.”

Brandon sighed. “Did you even leave?”

Jimmy looked back outside. “The wolf inside me did.”

“What does that mean?” Brandon also looked outside.

“I’m not sure I know myself.”

Brandon nodded. “So this wolf was kind of rubbing in on his action, huh?”

Jimmy bowed his eyes. How like it was for Brandon to put everything so simply. He had a knack for it. Behind Brandon, he saw Marie and Markey return into the living room, stopping behind the sofa, which was facing them.

“What does this Gary guy have to do with all of this?” Brandon asked turning and watching the others come into the room.

“He’s hunting all of us. He killed the one that bit me.” Jimmy pointed to Marie and to Markey. His arm felt so weak that when he lifted it, he almost couldn’t believe that it was his that he moved. It felt too heavy. It felt hard to move it right.

Brandon watched his arm wave. “So this Gary guy is hunting you and now this Samuel is hunting you as well?” He shook his head as he spoke.

Markey didn’t like what he just heard. “Samuel wouldn’t do that.” His voice sounded shallow. He sounded unforgiving. “He would never hunt us.”

Marie turned to him, as she watched Jimmy turn away. “Someone had to attack them—attack her.” She pointed with a half raised right arm to the arm of the sofa next to her.

Markey left the back of the sofa and walked to the other side of it. “Why would he do that? He was our leader
and our friend. He wouldn’t do that. He wouldn‘t hurt us.”

  Marie winced.

Jimmy turned from the door. “The wolf that attacked us was large. It was a male. It had to be him. Sasha said that there are no other wolves around here. If it wasn’t Samuel, then who was it? I know that much.”

“You do?” Markey left the arm of the sofa and faced Jimmy down. “Then why didn’t you stop him? You’re the strongest of all of us. You are the alpha male here. Why make her do it?” He raised his arm towards Sasha.

Jimmy bowed his head. He began shaking it as well. “I don’t know how to change.” He shrugged. “She defended us.” He felt almost like he was trying to defend himself, but didn’t know why. He didn’t even want to do it, but as far as he was concerned about it, he did. Somehow, it seemed almost like Markey was mocking what Sasha did for them. She deserved far more than that.

Marie stepped from the arm of the sofa and stepped between the two of them. “Sasha was always brave. What she did was what she felt like she had to do.” She stared Markey down, causing him to have to drop his eyes from hers. “If Samuel is doing this, and we also have that Gary fellow out there after us too, then you better learn how to change. Our lives may depend on it.” She smiled to Jimmy.

“Why? Why am I so much stronger?”

“You are the oldest. That makes you the strongest.”

“I don’t know what that means.” Jimmy shook his head.

“You are the one that made him. Kalima made all of us. He’s the only one that can defeat a lesser wolf. You are stronger than the ones you make.” Marie stepped forward, and shrugged her shoulders some. “You are the only one here that has the strength to fight him.” She smiled again.

Jimmy nodded. “You stood up to him.”

She smiled. “Kalima made me. He made Samuel. Only you have that strength. Only Kalima can fight something that he made.”

He returned her smile. “Will you show me how?” He looked from her face back down to the floor. “Teach me how to change?”

Marie smiled. “You already know how. You just have to ask.”
