Hendric snorted, but a smile weaseled its way over his face. “You wish.”
One of the assassins fought against the dragons tying him. “You think you’ve won? You haven’t! Dragons are known throughout this world now. Sooner or later, you will have to face the consequences. You are all dead lizards. When the humans of this world realize what you are, they will bomb the ever-loving shit out of you! Byrelmore will fall and humans will reign!”
Volcant rolled his eyes at the assassin’s dramatics, but a quick glance around showed he wasn’t the only one whose fires churned in his gut.
It was true. The humans of this world were never meant to find out about dragons. Time-travel was a risky business, but they had negated the risks by keeping it closely monitored and ensuring that the humans of this world didn’t find out about them. Now that dragons were known here, they would either have to fully embrace that or cut themselves off entirely.
If it came to the latter… he’d choose this world over Byrelmore. For Misty’s sake. That was one truth he had told Vilma, he was willing to give up his fires, his dragon, for her. Because she was his mate, his one true love.
“Let’s get you to Byrelmore so you can heal properly,” Volcant murmured under his breath as he lifted Hendric to his feet. “With this lot in custody, we will get the answers we desire.”
Hendric’s face pinched in pain, but he didn’t protest. Around them, the guard loaded up the surviving assassins to take them back to the rendezvous point. They had been successful. Now, only time would tell if it was worth it in the end.
His gaze fell on Vilma again. Dead by her own hand rather than risk giving up her secrets. He would never truly know why she did what she did. And he would have to live with that for the rest of his life.
Chapter Seventeen
Misty
Friday night, time for Dungeons and Dragons. Quite literally, as far as the dragons went. The housemates gathered around the table where the D&D board was set up, Anna at the head in her usual Dungeon Master spot with the rest fanned out. Indulf and Volcant sat across the table from Sylvia and Misty, while Penny and Katrina were opposite Anna.
“So.” Penny pointed at the two men. “You two are really dragons. Why are you playing this nerdy game with us?”
Indulf laughed at that. “It makes my wife happy.”
Volcant nodded. “And I find it an excellent way to study your culture. After all, I am the ambassador between our worlds now.”
“D&D has nothing to do with culture, except nerd culture,” Penny said, but she grinned anyway. She pointed at Indulf. “You. Do you have a brother? Because I’ll be honest, the idea of being a dragon princess is really growing on me.”
Indulf gave her a vague smile.
Misty rolled her eyes, then turned her attention back to Volcant. Ambassador. He had been offered his place as head of security back, but after careful deliberation, he had declined. It was his fault this world knew about dragons and he felt a certain responsibility to see the results through. There were a lot of mixed results when Indulf formally announced the existence of Byrelmore. Lots of people refused to believe that they were real and many more were calling for severe regulations to be put on the dragons.
Hence where Volcant came in. He was the head of a team who would be taking care of the relationship between Byrelmore and the various governments of this time. It wasn’t going to be an easy task and Misty already had felt the effects—her face was plastered on all the tabloids and several of her ex-boyfriends had come forward with a smear campaign against her—but she wasn’t going to let that get her down. This was important work. Indulf was handling it all well, but he had a kingdom to run. He couldn't be in two places at once.
Besides, this meant that Volcant and Misty could stay in the present world for long stretches of time. It made adjusting to everything a little easier, although Misty fully planned to live in Byrelmore full-time very soon. After all, the more time Volcant spent in this world, the cooler his fires became. The fact that he was willing to give up so much for her made her heart sing for him.
She couldn’t ask him to make it permanent, though, and especially not for Cara’s sake. They’d lived in Byrelmore for long enough that their daughter was starting to sneeze sparks. It was both exciting and terrifying and she and Volcant had made sure to fire-proof everything in the house.
As the game started, Sylvia nudged her in the side. “So, the wedding is coming up here soon, right?”
Misty nodded. “The human one, at least. We’ll be having a dragon wedding next time we go to Byrelmore. It plans to be… exciting. But hey, two honeymoons.”
“Two?” Volcant raised a brow and shot her a flirting grin. “I don’t think so. I intend to have one very long honeymoon. At least a year.”
Misty saw the opening and couldn’t resist. She slapped her hands to either side of her face and gasped noisily. “I don’t think so! You might be able to have sex for a full year straight, but I, weak little human that I am, need a break.”
Anna burst out laughing at that. “Misty, trust me. Your stamina is only going to get better”
“Are you sure you don’t have a brother?” Penny turned pouting eyes on Indulf.
Sylvia shifted in her chair, her face pinched as it always was when things got too sexual for her liking. “Can we just play the game now? My character’s been hanging over a pit of crocodiles for a week!”
“Yes, lets,” Katrina agreed, beaming brightly.
Misty watched her for a moment, her heart aching. Volcant had told her about Katrina. She was the lost princess, Indulf’s daughter Wildref. They had only discovered this fact when Anna ended up in Byrelmore the first time. Since this world had no magic, she never developed the fires that would allow her to turn into a dragon in the first place.
Of course, Katrina didn’t know that. As far as she knew, she was an orphan abandoned at a fire station as a baby. She had grown up with adoptive parents who loved her and Indulf had decided not to disrupt her life by telling her the truth. Misty understood. It was hard enough to go through life as Katrina had, but to be introduced to a father who looked hardly older than you… It would be too much to deal with.
Now that dragons have been revealed to the world, though, perhaps Indulf would tell her. Volcant had told Misty that he hoped that the king would. Now, looking between the two of them, Misty could see similarities. They had the same mouths, the same shape of head and the same hairline. Their eyes were almost identical, too. The biggest difference was that the strong angles in Indulf’s face were softened in Katrina and Katrina was several shades lighter than her father.
“Right.” Anna gazed over the board. “Where were we?”
They settled into the game, but Misty’s mind was far from the fictional events taking place. It was still fun, of course, but not nearly as fun as her own excitement with real dragons. A grin crossed her face as she stole a look at Volcant. He was watching her, too, and a special smile spread across his face.
They weren’t telling anybody, not yet, but she was pregnant again. Sooner than either of them expected and quite a shock—but a welcome one. Even if she worried from time to time how she was going to adapt to being a mom to two kids under the age of two, the little ball of warmth inside her that was their growing child only filled her with love.
Volcant had kept his word to Indulf. The assassins were caught, and they were getting answers from them about that day. Government response to Volcant’s ambassadorship was overwhelmingly positive. Misty was able to see her parents more often and, while her biological father had tried to contact her, she felt no need to include him in her life when he had cut her from his.
All in all, she had nothing but hope for the future here, surrounded by friends, with the man she loved and who loved her.
Nothing could be greater than this.
