by Stephanie Arnold

Roy—Thank you for being that shoulder Jonathan needed. He was able to be stronger because you were there.

Mark—You are one of my biggest supporters. Your spiritual growth and guidance have helped me wade through these unchartered waters much more smoothly than I would have without your help.

Rachelle and Carolina—I cannot express the love I have for you both. Thank you for loving me the way you do. Alan and Jeremy, you are both very lucky.

Addie—Thank you for letting me borrow your mother to write this book. You have amazing parents.

Tessie—Woman. Not a day goes by that I don’t thank G-d for you coming into my life. You have been there for me when there was no way I could show up. You have been there for Jonathan when he didn’t have the energy to talk and you have been there for the most important little people in my life. G-d allowed you to walk into my life and no matter where you are or where you go, know that I am always there for you. Always.

Barri—Thank you for believing I could do this.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, Executive Deputy Attorney General Karla Sanchez, and the attorneys and staff in the New York Attorney General’s office—My husband loved his position and serving the people of New York. I apologize for derailing his government service early with this awful experience. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.

American Society of Anesthesiologists—Thank you for being the first to tell my story and for encouraging me to keep telling it. No one knows how valuable physician anesthesiologists are until they desperately need one. Your doctors save lives. When Seconds Count—you want them to be there. https://www.asahq.org/whensecondscount.

Miranda Klassen—Thank G-d you survived. Without you, thousands of people would be lost and the information about AFEs would be virtually inaccessible to laypeople, victims, and their spouses. You are more than an AFE survivor. You are more than my friend and colleague. You are my sister. For the most up-to-date information on AFEs and how to help, please log onto www.afesupport.org.

Sari Padorr—Well, cousin, if you didn’t make me tell this story to CBS Chicago, where would I be? I think your intuition is spot-on. I think you are an amazing writer and have a great instinct when it comes to telling a story. Without you, I would have been frozen in many parts of the book. Without you, I would have missed elements from our childhood that were pertinent to what was happening with me in therapy. And without you, this book would not have been what it is. You remember your promise to me. Thank you for flinging open the doors to Caribou Cabin and making it a writer’s haven. I love you like my sister.

And finally, I’d like to thank the force and forces that came together to ensure my safe return. I don’t just thank you; my family is forever grateful.

  L’chaim! (To life!)
