He liked her fire. She would need it in the coming days to survive what she must.
“Your females are without male protection and vulnerable to attack. By combining your pack with Aiden’s you both become stronger. And Aiden’s males are raging with the primitive urge to mate. Casual sex no longer satisfies them.”
Tristan gave her a meaningful glance. “Like their master, Aiden, the male instinct to breed runs strong.”
A faint blush tinted her cheeks.
“They are so driven to mate and breed that they have lost all sense and obey only their wolf instincts, to find and cover the nearest available female. It took only a cunning Nycencth Witch to nearly bring down several of them, setting them against each other. Males who swore loyalty to their leader forgot their oaths as they fought over the right to mate with her. They are desperate. If not for Jake Anderson and Molly Monroe’s love and courage, many good males in Aiden’s pack would be dead. It was quite bloody.”
A small gasp. “Is Aiden all right?”
He glanced at her with a twist of his lips. “Your beloved is fine. As usual, he managed to evade any real harm.”
“He’s not my beloved.”
Tristan shrugged. “Believe what you will. I care not about the lies you tell yourself. Know this, Nikita Blakemore. All that is required from you is the necessary hospitality of hosting the challenge, your observation of the fighting, and your willingness to submit to him when he takes you before the pack.”
Sharp, glistening fangs emerged from her upper teeth as Nikita bared her lips. “I will not be submissive to a male who thinks himself better than me.”
He cupped her chin again, his touch gentler this time, for he knew her deepest worry. “Not one who thinks himself better, but knows he is your equal.”
Tristan dropped his hand and strode away. He turned at the railing. “One week, Nikita. You will host the challenge in one week. Do not make me angry.”
No need for a demonstration. The Lupine was practically sweating panic though she bravely tried to hide it.
She waved a hand. “Sure. Why don’t you vanish and go chase a rabbit shifter or fry a possum or whatever it is you do for fun.”
He liked her spunk, and the fact she refused to show fear. He could smell her terror. It was not for herself, but the one she fiercely protected all these years since their birth.
“Oh and, Nia?”
At the use of her real name, not the name she used to deceive the world, she turned with a sharp gasp.
He smiled darkly. “Tell your twin I will be coming for her. In one week, soon as the challenge is finished.”
With a smile, he dematerialized as she picked up the horseshoe and flung it at him.
Soon.
Very soon, the real Nikita, the older twin who had remained hidden from the world, would be his…

“No questions.” Robert folded his hands upon the desktop. “Not even a hint of curiosity? Cadeyrn told you what I am. Are you afraid of me?”
Her new master flicked out a claw and dragged it across the pristine desktop, then over the paper detailing her life. The crackle of paper and the gouging of wood rattled her self-composure. Aurora recovered and stared at him.
“Are you going to kill and eat me, or should I get started on the laundry?”
He blinked hard, and the hint of a smile played on his firm mouth. “I don’t eat Mages, although I have heard they are quite tasty with a garnish of almond butter. And I do my own laundry.”
A sense of humor. She cautioned herself against it. The witch had told jokes at dinnertime, laughed and then would slam the iron bar against Aurora’s hand an instant later as Aurora set down a plate of bread and butter.
The alpha leaned forward, stretching the material of his navy long-sleeved shirt. As the material shifted, she saw the edges of a familiar tattoo on his tanned neck. Aurora’s hopes leapt. Sign of the dragon. Surely this enslavement could provide the key to freedom.
“Who am I?”
She knew his background, from the briefing given to her last night upon her arrival, before Michelle had locked her in the abandoned barn.
“Robert Keynes, alpha of the Keynes pack, one of the few red Lupine packs in the United States. You’re 34, and own a botanical nursery and grow tropical plants and trees. There are 82 members of your pack,” Aurora recited as if she were in a classroom.
“Eighty-one.” The coolness of his dark eyes remained. “Molly, my niece and my heir, has gone with her mate to the Mitchell pack in Montana.”
A tight knot formed in her belly. Cadeyrn had given her to Robert as a breeder. The Lupine needed an heir of his blood.
“You have no mate?”
A shadow crossed his face. “No.”
Surprise filled her. Lupines were a sensual people, who enjoyed frequent sex. The urge to mate and breed ran strong in them.
“Why not?”
“I’m waiting for the right woman.”
Then he pushed up from his chair and despite her bravado, she quivered. Robert stood well over six feet. His sheer physical presence made her very much aware of him as a man. He was extremely handsome, with a shock of silver hair threaded liberally through the black strands. Premature gray. Or silver, caused by something else…
The very something that could set her free, and free Emily. Her pulse pounded with excitement. Had she finally found the man marked by the dragon?
“I need to breed an heir.” His gaze swept over her in a lingering caress that made her shiver with awareness. “This is why the Shadow Wizard gave you to me as a gift. You’re Mage. Healthy and just entering the prime of your child-bearing years, and he thinks you can produce strong offspring.”
She had lived years as a slave, working many hours to serve her masters in the house, even in the fields, as the Ogre had a fancy for farming. But never in their beds.
Aurora gathered her emotions and stuffed them deep inside. Her body did not matter. Only Emily did. Her sister must never suffer the same fate as Aurora.
If it meant lying coldly beneath this wolf and conceiving his child, so be it. He was her master. He could order her to do anything. If she tried disobeying, the magick collar around her neck would squeeze tighter and tighter until her vision grayed and the pain became excruciating. And she’d die, before she ever had the chance to set Emily free.

br /> Robert glanced down at the document holding the details of her life. “Your dossier says you’ve never lain with a man before.”
Then he looked up and gave a smile, showing even white teeth. “Or a wolf.”
