He pulled her to him, positioning her on his lap. “Deacon didn’t need a reason for anything he did. He didn’t need an excuse and he didn’t have feelings for the aftermath. He said all those things to you to spark a reaction in you. To make you hurt, like you’re hurting now.” Diego hugged her, rubbing her back. “But I promise you, he won’t hurt you again.”
He hoped she believed him. Sasha pulled back and kissed him, tears streaming down her face. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Hopefully, you won’t have to find out.” He smiled.
She would be okay. He knew it. She nearly scared the shit out of him earlier when she woke from the nightmare in a panicked state. He couldn’t even touch her without rejection. But that was okay. She came to him now and he’d hold her and love her until she felt better, no matter how long it took.
She glanced over at his collection of food from the kitchen. “We’re missing something with your food sex collection of goodies.”
She climbed off him and grabbed her robe, heading out of the room. Diego waited for her to return and laughed when he saw what she brought back. “If we’re having food sex, we’re going to have it right. Take off your clothes.” She shook the chocolate syrup and popped the top, waiting.
“I thought you were tired,” he said, though he complied with her orders.
“I got a few hours sleep.” She shrugged. “I’ll be fine.”
He tossed his clothes to the side, vowing to pick them up later. Afterward, he lay across the bed with his hands behind his head. “Food sex isn’t like a quickie. It’s long, leisurely licks in various places on your lover’s body. Could take hours. You sure you can last that long?”
She grinned and squirted the gooey liquid in a line down the centre of his body. “Are you sure you can last that long?”
“Touché.” Diego smiled. Sleep could wait for the both of them. “I guess we’ll see, won’t we?”
Epilogue
At a distance, thunder cracked. Lightning flashed across the sky. He’d been roaming for hours, trying to make sense of what to do next. Diego assured him Deacon was dead, but his instinct told him better. His enemy was still alive, still breathing while his beloved lay cold in the ground.
Quinn sniffed the air, finding it scented with blood. There were spots from their attacks covering the ground, yet when he went to where Deacon had laid…nothing. He’d seen with his own eyes as Diego took him down, bit his neck and inadvertently punctured his artery. Logically, Deacon shouldn’t be alive.
Quinn lifted his head and searched the wooded area around him. The Black Wolves’ scents carried through the woods. Max told him he was paranoid. Maybe he was. Roni had been the love of his life and he wasn’t about to let that cold-hearted bastard live one more day while Quinn lived without her. They’d fought before, and Deacon backed down. After he’d gone after Chloe, he’d promised to leave them alone. The Grey Wolves had killed nearly half of Deacon’s pack and Quinn knew Deacon had been scared. Stupidly, Quinn had taken pity on him.
He growled. He should have killed him when he had the chance. If he had, maybe Roni would still be here. Quinn thought back to her funeral. He’d shifted to human form long enough to sit through the fifteen-minute service and he’d barely lasted that long without breaking down. The pain was unbearable. He’d never thought he’d feel that kind of pain but staying in wolf form helped. Animals didn’t have human feelings, and in a way, it didn’t hurt as bad. He’d struggled to keep it together and had shifted as soon as the service was over. His need for vengeance spiked.
He would get Deacon, if it was the last thing he ever did. Quinn snarled and took off into the woods, following the path while it was still saturated with the Black Wolves’ scents.
