So I behave. I stand here and listen as Mark is his usual dumbass self—seriously, you’d think at over sixty years old, the guy would’ve grown up at least a little bit by now. He recites some corny poem he found online about love being like air. How you can’t see it, but it’s always there. Kate and I had decided to just do traditional vows instead of writing our own, and after we say I do, after we slide the rings on one another’s fingers, Mark claps.
“By the power vested in me,” he booms, holding up his hands like he’s parting the Red Sea or some shit.
I hold up a finger to cut him off. “Hold up, Twilight. I do have one thing I’d like to say before you make your big declaration.”
Mark’s face falls. “Oh, come on, man. You’re totally harshing my mellow here.”
I lift an eyebrow at him but refrain from asking what the fuck that’s supposed to mean. I don’t have the time or the patience to deal with one of Mark’s anecdotes.
Turning back to Kate, I take her hands in mine.
“Kate, I told you once that I was faithless before I met you. In life, in love, in God. But once you came into my life, that changed. Faithless to faithful, I believe that was the phrase I used.”
She nods. “I remember.”
“Well, I was wrong. It wasn’t my faith that I found.”
Her brows pinch together. “I don’t understand.”
“It was you. You give me faith. Faith that I can do anything. That together, we can achieve anything. As long as I have you by my side, I feel like I can conquer the world.”
She smiles as she leans into me. “I don’t know about the world. Let’s start with conquering common core math,” she says as she presses a kiss to my lips.
“Hey!” Mark barks. “You’re not supposed to do that yet.”
She pulls away as we both laugh.
“Sorry, Reverend Twilight,” I say, making what I think is the sign of the cross. “Please proceed.”
“By the power vested in me by the great state of—oh, fuck it,” he bellows, dropping his hands and sending a ripple of laughter through the entire room. “You guys have already ruined it. You’re man and wife. Kiss her or whatever.”
I chuckle at Mark’s sulky attitude but don’t give it a second thought.
Instead, I pull Kate to me, my arm snaking tightly around her waist.
And I kiss the shit out of my wife.
