“What now?” Sarah asked Dr. Hernandez, who stood at the foot of her bed, looking on.
“Now, we wait,” the doctor said, “and we hope that lots of people volunteer to become donors.”
Sarah hoped it wouldn’t be too long a wait. Waiting could be so tedious. “Do I have to stay in isolation?”
“Yes. You’re too vulnerable to infection.”
Sarah felt exhaustion creeping over her, and sleep reaching out for her. She gazed up at the cherubic face of her brother. “Sing me a song, Richie. One of your favorites.”
His head bobbed in assent, then his little child’s voice began chanting, “There was a farmer had a dog, and Bingo was his name-o …”
As Richie continued singing, Sarah closed her eyes. “Faith, courage, and hope”—that was what JWC had given her, more than the money. She knew she had so much to be grateful for, no matter what happened tomorrow.
