“When it comes to other High Priestesses, we can’t use our powers on each other. They work on other low-level witches, but not on someone else of the same level. We may be very powerful, but that is one thing we can’t control. Believe me, I wish that I would have seen this coming.” Sybil pointed out.
I rolled my eyes. I’ve had about enough of this witchy shit.
“Okay, so the next question is...how do we stop the disease from spreading? Is it possible to get rid of it at all?” I asked with a small amount of hope that we could destroy it.
“We aren’t completely sure. With Circee’s curse being made unbreakable, it’s hard to say. Her death definitely made things a lot more complicated. Sybil and I will have to do a lot of searching in spell books and will have to talk with other High Priestesses. All I know is, we will have to leave right away so we can try and figure out how to save the factions. This won’t be easy.” Amora said with heavy concentration on her face.
“Amora, it’s probably best then we leave right now. We have a lot to do. The more time we spend trying to fix this, the more people will get hurt. Let’s let them put this poor thing out of his misery. It’s not fair for him to have to suffer this fate any longer than he has to.” Sybil said with a solemn look.
Amora nodded. “But first, I will assist them in easing his pain. I won’t take his life, that is not my job as a neutral being. He won’t feel a thing. Just please end his life quickly.”
Amora walked over to the cage and knelt down. The rabid wolf threw himself against the cage, trying to get to her. Snarling and spitting. It didn’t phase her. If anything she looked deeply sorry for him. I can’t blame her though, it wasn’t his choice to be turned into this. I can only hope that none of us meet the same fate.
Raising her right hand, she aimed her palm at the wolf. “ I’m sorry that you’ve had to endure such pain, my friend. I hope your next life treats you better. Rest in peace. Somnum.” A blue mist left her palm and wrapped itself around the wolf’s head. Instantly he dropped into a ball on the floor of the cage. Looking relieved, Amora stood and turned to us.
“He’s asleep and he won’t wake up or feel any pain. It’s the least I could do for him, but the rest is up to you. Remember he was like you before this sickness ravaged him. Take him out of that cage and give him a proper burial once all is said and done.” Amora said while taking one last look at the wolf. Sybil held her hand out for Amora to take. Taking Sybil’s hand, they both walked up the stairs without saying another word.
“Well fuck. Who wants to take care of this? I would, but I need to get back to Scarlett and check on her. She’s going to want to know what happened.” I said while looking at the guys.
“Kota and I will take care of him. The rest of you head back to my house. We will meet you there shortly. Rhett, take care of my daughter. Maybe make her something to eat, she looks ill.” Rhett said while staring at the wolf sleeping in the cage.
I nodded. Jackson, Finn, and I left Barret and Dakota in the basement to put the wolf out of misery. The three of us walked in silence back to Scarlett’s parent's house. Before reaching the house, we heard a sound that we weren’t expecting to hear. Laughter. Lots of it. What the hell is going on in there? We made our way into the house to find Scarlett, Layla, and Athena all in the kitchen with glasses of bourbon. Weres don’t get drunk easily. Our bodies burn through the alcohol pretty fast. So unless you slam your drinks, you aren’t getting plastered. But they seem to be having a pretty good buzz going. Damnit. Couldn’t have waited for us?
“What are you three laughing at?” Jackson asked with curiosity on his face.
“Oh nothing, baby. Just girl stuff.” Athena said with a smirk.
“Yeah, okay.” Jackson rolled his eyes at her. She smiled.
I walked over to Scarlett, who was in her usual spot at anyone’s house. The countertop. I stood between her legs and wrapped my arms around her. She felt smaller, more fragile. But her warmth made me feel at peace. I buried my face into her neck, breathing in her scent. A calmness washed over me that I hadn’t felt in a while. Just being near her makes me feel better. She leaned back, trying to look at me. She grabbed my face and brought her lips to mine. I kissed her back.
“Are you okay, Rhett? Amora and Sybil filled us in before they left.” She said against my lips.
“I’m fine, my mate. How are you? Seems like you guys are having a good time.” I said with a smile.
She nodded and beamed at me. “Athena is the culprit. She’s always known where my mom keeps the good stuff. She disappeared for one minute and then came back with bourbon. My mom and I just couldn’t say no. I think we all needed a little reprieve.” she said softly.
“Of course, Scar, I understand. I’m so happy to hear you laugh again. It seriously made my heart happy to hear it. I love you so much.” I said resting my forehead against hers. We stayed that way for a few minutes while the world around us just disappeared. Holding each other and just enjoying the moment. Barret and Dakota walked in, covered in dirt from burying the wolf. The air took a somber tone, ruining our moment together. I held Scarlett for a moment longer before untangling from her and turning around to face her father.
“Rhett, can I speak with you for a moment?” Barret said as he walked to his office.
I gave Scarlett a quick kiss and followed her father. I walked into his office and he shut the door behind me. He went and sat down behind his desk, leaning back and resting his head. He closed his eyes for a moment.
“Is everything alright, Barret?” I asked. Wondering what he brought me here for.
“Dakota and I took care of the wolf. It was quick. We buried him in the woods next to Kota’s house. But that’s not what I wanted to talk about.” He said while looking me in the eyes.
“Okay. So what is it you wanted to talk about then?” He’s sure being awfully cryptic all of a sudden. What’s with him?
“I know you and Scarlett just went through a soul-wrenching tragedy.” He said with caution.
“Barret, with all due respect, I don’t want to talk about that. Not right now. I can’t.” I choked out, trying not to be weak in front of another alpha.
“I understand, I wasn’t about to go prodding around it. We are all in pain from the loss. I wanted to talk about your future with my daughter. The witches proclaimed dark times. We haven’t seen the last of it. With you and my baby being mates, I think it’s time you and Scar completed the bond by having your mating ceremony. Who knows what the future holds, and I believe it would bring something new and something all of us could use…” He took a breath.
“Her mother has been non-stop talking about it. It’s just something to think about. I’m not saying it has to happen tomorrow, but the sooner the better. Plus, I think Scarlett would be more at peace with a complete bond between you two. It’s a whole nother world after the ceremony. You both could use it.” Barret said while holding my gaze.
“I...I don’t know what to say to that. That’s not what I expected to hear, honestly. But I do agree with you. I haven’t thought about it a whole lot with everything that’s been happening. I’d definitely like to have our ceremony soon. You are right when you say that anything could happen. I love her with all my being and I just want to see her happy. We almost lost each other over losing our son. It almost killed me, seeing her in such agony. I refuse to see her in pain like that again.” I said looking down, avoiding his gaze, trying not to lose my shit.
He nodded.
“First thing tomorrow morning I will go into town to the jeweler's shop. I’ll pick out a ring and propose. Maybe set our ceremony next week.” I said while in serious thought.
“Get her the ring, and I’ll take care of the preparations. Scarlett’s a very loved woman. Your ceremony will have quite the turnout. Everyone will be happy to see her wed. Man to man. There are two things in our lives that shape us into who we truly are. Being with ones who we are meant to be mated with, and the birth of our children. It shapes us
. You will have one, and later on, the other. I know it’s too soon to think about it, but just know that there are possibilities for the future. You just have to want it.” He said in all seriousness.
“I agree with you. I’ve been on this earth a hundred years. And none of those years contained the happiness that I’ve had these last few weeks. I wouldn’t go back, even with all the pain that’s been given to us. In the end, Scarlett’s all that matters to me.” I said while picturing my mate in my mind. She’s gorgeous.
“Great, it’s settled. We will have a ceremony next week. A perfect place would be at your house. She’d be most comfortable there.”
I nodded. “Agreed. Thanks, Barret. You raised an amazing daughter and I’m lucky to have her as mine. I’d lay my life on the line for her.” I said
“And that’s why I brought it up, she loves you too. I want to see her happy and you make her happy. Now. I think we’ve all had enough for one day. Get my baby girl home and feed her. Then put her ass to bed, she looks like she could use some more rest.” Barret said thoughtfully.
I smiled. “Right.”
Leaving his office and making my way back to the kitchen, everyone had a drink in hand and were in heavy conversation. Scarlett noticed me and started beaming. I still can’t get over just how amazing she is. I wonder if she knows she holds my sanity in her hands. That’s a lot of power over someone.
“Hey beautiful, are you ready to head home? I could use some dinner and I know damn well that you could, too. Plus, I want snuggles for bed tonight and no funny business. I just want to hold you tonight, I need it.” I said wholeheartedly.
She walked over and laced her fingers through mine, looking up and smiling.
“Yeah baby, let’s go. Let’s say our goodbyes.” She said softly.
“Hey mom, we’re gonna get going. It’s been a long day. I love you and thank you for tonight, it was nice. I needed it.” She said while letting go of me and grabbing her mother into a tight hug.
“You’re my baby girl. I know you in ways that others don’t. Go home and let that wonderful mate of yours take care of you.” She said winking at me. I blushed causing Finn and Jackson to snicker at me.
“Man Rhett, who knew you could be such a softy. Our big bad alpha, who never showed emotion, is now more whipped than whipped cream itself.” Finn said laughing.
I glared at him. Layla walked over and smacked both boys in the back of their heads. They both had a surprised look and then their cheeks reddened.
“Bye boys. Leave my future son-in-law alone. I’ll whoop your asses for him and then we’ll see who’s more whipped.” Layla gave them a wink and then looked at me with a huge grin.
They rubbed the back of their heads, said their goodbyes to Layla and walked out.
Layla walked over and gave me a hug. Barret walked in, walked over to Scar and snatched her up in a giant hug. She was so tiny against his body and it was actually really cute. Did I just think that? Fuck. The guys are right, I’m whipped. But I couldn’t be more proud. I smiled to myself.
Barret let go of Scar and walked over to me, putting out his hand for a shake. I grabbed his hand and as soon as I did, he pulled me in for a half hug. One of them guy hugs with the slap on the back. He’s a great guy. I’m lucky my mate’s family is so welcoming. He let me go and walked back to his office.
“Is he okay” Scar asked with concern in her voice.
“He’s fine, baby. He’s just got a lot on his mind right now. Let’s go.” I grabbed her hand and we left. It was a silent drive home. But it was a comfortable silence. All I could think about was tomorrow. What ring I’d buy her. How I’d propose to her. How would she react? Would she be ready? Oh god, I hope she doesn’t turn me down after what happened with our son. I wouldn’t be mad if she did. But I don’t think she will. I feel a strong connection now than we had before. Pain brings couples closer, from what I’ve witnessed.
We pulled up to the house and I noticed my sister’s car parked by the garage. Oh fuck. This isn’t going to be good. I looked at Scar, who was already looking at me.
“I’m going to go in and make some food. You should probably have a talk with Hazel. I’m sure she has a lot on her mind and she could probably use her brother right now.” She said as she got out of the Jeep. I sat there for a second. Trying to prepare myself for the force that is my sister. Well, no point in trying to avoid her. I got out and followed behind my mate.
Hazel was waiting on the porch for me. Arms crossed. Pain and concern etched on her face. Hazel and Scarlett shared a look and Scar walked inside. I walked up the steps and made my way to my sister. I cautiously wrapped my sister into a hug. She was tense at first, and then she relaxed, wrapping her arms around my waist.
“Are you okay, Hazel?” I asked with sorrow.
“I’m angry at you for how you handled the situation. I know you were hurt. I can’t imagine what it was like, but Scarlett was so hurt. I don’t want to dwell on it, but it sucks. I honestly just don’t even know what to say. I’m mad. But I hurt for you. I just want to know you’ll be okay? I grew up with you. Never once have you spoken of a future. With a mate, or a baby. And then within a few weeks, you had both. And one of those was taken from you. I can’t imagine what you’re feeling. Will you heal from this?” She choked out.
“I’ll be okay, Hazel. You’re right, it’s been a rollercoaster for me. Going from little to everything in a short amount of time. But I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world. Of course, I’d like to have my son back. But he isn’t coming back and it will take time to recover, but with Scarlett beside me, it will be possible.” I said against her hair.
She nodded.
“Heh. I actually had a whole conversation already drawn up in my head before you got here. It involved kicking and screaming and maybe me ripping your head off. But when I saw Scarlett’s face, and then your face, I couldn’t. I can still see the hurt on you both. I don’t want to be another problem on your plate. I’m your sister. It’s been you and I for as long as I can remember. I’m supposed to be here to support you. You’re my big brother and I love you.” She said as tears fell from her face.
I wiped them away with my thumbs, I kissed her forehead.
“I’m glad I’ve had you along for the ride on this crazy thing called life. I’ve been a dick a lot of it, and I’m sorry for that. But you’ve never given up on me. I can’t ever thank you enough for. I love you too, sis.” I said with nothing but sincerity.
She gave me another hug and then went inside. Not saying another word. I have a feeling she was about to break down. She really hates me seeing her that way. I hope one day she gets over it and realizes that I care for her and I’ll always be there for her.
Night had fallen and I just stood on the porch, staring off into the distance. The door opened and Scar walked out with a plate of food. She handed it to me.
“Thanks baby.” I sat down on the top step and began eating. It tasted so good. Hazel had cooked up steaks and potatoes. Damn that child could cook. It was heavenly.
“Is she okay? She walked in and didn’t even look at me when she walked upstairs to her room.” she looked at me, trying to read me.
“She’ll be okay, Scar. She held back a lot. Only because we are still dealing with a lot. I wouldn’t have blamed her for going off, honestly. She doesn’t like me to see her look weak and vulnerable. So she hides and I let her be. It’s always been something we’ve dealt with.” I said taking another bite of my steak.
“I understand. I’m going to go take a quick shower and then I’m going to crawl into bed. I’ll be waiting for those snuggles.” Scarlett said as she walked back inside.
“Hey woman, did you eat!?” I yelled before she shut the door.
“Yes, baby. My plate was waiting for me with a note that threatened me with force-feeding if I didn’t eat it before bed. I’m going to take a stab in the dark and say it was Hazel. So I ate. My tummy is full.” She said and then shut the door.
Good, that’s one less thing I have to worry about. Finishing up my food, I took my plate inside, washed it, and set it aside to dry. Making sure all of the lights were turned off downstairs, I went upstairs to Scar and I’s bedroom, she was already passed out with the TV on, of course. Why am I not surprised? The Vampire Diaries was playing and I know this because my dear sister Hazel forced me to watch it with her. It was odd but it was our bonding thing. It’s the last episode where Elana was brought back to life out of her coma, and Damon and her were married. They lived a long and happy life together. I hope that’s going to be me and the gorgeous woman in my bed. Unlike Damon Salvatore, I know what I have in my life and I won’t do a damn thing to risk losing it.
I took myself a quick shower. Slipping on some boxers, I crawled in bed, grabbing my mate and laying her on my chest. She fits so perfectly. She didn’t even stir, her breathing leveled out better and her heartbeat slowed down and matched mine. Her hand that was lying on my stomach, started to move in circles. I don’t think she realized that she was doing that. This precious woman is all I’ll ever need in this life. I don’t want to move from this moment. I just want her on my chest, holding me down, keeping me grounded.
Tomorrow is going to be an amazing day, I can feel it.

The next morning, I woke up on Rhett’s chest. My hand was lying on his stomach, and his hand laid on mine. He was sound asleep, looking so peaceful, and I was happy to see him that way. I kissed his shoulder and crept out of bed, careful not to wake him. He needs the rest as much as I do. I know it’s an alpha’s job to take care of everyone and everything, but even brutes need sleep.
After slipping my robe on over my silk nightgown and slipping my feet into my soft slippers, I made my way downstairs. Instead of smelling the usual bacon, eggs, and toast breakfast, I smelled waffles. Not just any waffles, but blueberry. My ultimate favorite! My stomach started to growl. Following the amazing smell of food, I find Jackson, Finn, Athena, and Hazel drinking coffee and making waffles. They caught a glimpse of me and froze. What the fuck?
