“Thank you.” I crinkle my nose at him. “Why are you so worried about Everett calling you back?” I ask curiously.
“I don’t know.” He runs a hand through his hair, looking anywhere but at me.
“Now why don’t you tell me the truth?”
“I don’t know. I just got the impression when I talked to him a couple of days ago that something was up. Did Hannah mention anything?”
Everett and Hannah reconnected at our wedding. Let’s just say things took an unexpected turn after that. Two days after my wedding, Hannah quit her job and jumped on a plane to Hawaii to live with Everett. And people said Harris and I moved fast.
“Not to me, no.” I turn to face him. “What did Everett say to give you the impression that something was up?”
“Just the way he was acting. He’s usually super talkative but he barely said ten words in the twenty minutes we were on the phone.”
“I’m sure it’s fine. He was probably having a bad day.” I reach up and wrap my arms around his neck.
“Yeah, you’re probably right. I’ll call him again tomorrow if I don’t hear from him.”
“Sounds like a plan.” I push up on my tiptoes and press a kiss to my husband’s lips.
Husband.
It’s been six months and I still haven’t gotten used to that word. It feels so good to say it though.
“Why don’t you set the table and I’ll get the food. The bread should be done in a couple of minutes.” Reluctantly, I release my grip on him before stepping back.
“Consider it done.” He kisses my temple before heading across the kitchen to where we keep the plates.
I’ve just gotten dinner arranged on the table when the doorbell rings.
Right on time.
Turning to Harris, he shrugs, indicating he has no idea who it could be before taking off toward the front door. I try to hide my smile, but it’s nearly impossible to do when I see the huge bouquet of red and blue flowers hiding the face of a delivery driver.
Harris takes the flowers and turns back to me, confusion written all over his handsome face.
“Um, did you send yourself flowers?” he asks, setting the vase on the kitchen island.
“They aren’t for me. You sure your girlfriend from work didn’t send them to you?” Trudy, an older lady in our HR department, has a huge crush on Harris and flirts with him relentlessly. I think it’s hilarious. She’s old enough to be his mom, maybe even his grandma. When she called him honey buns one day in the break room, I about died. I’ve been referring to her as his girlfriend ever since.
“Very funny.” He peers over the bouquet, snagging the card out of the middle.
“Who are they addressed to?” I ask, already knowing the answer but trying to play cute.
“Uh...” His confused expression intensifies. “Me.” He looks down at the card and then back up at me, realization dawning on his face. “You sent me flowers?” he asks, that gorgeous smile of his tugging at the corners of his mouth.
“I don’t know. Why don’t you open the card and find out?” I rock up and down on the balls of my feet, excitement coursing through me.
He peels open the envelope and retrieves the card, his eyes scanning the small paper. As I watch him read, I’m reminded of all the times I’ve received similar flowers from him, always accompanied by a card that starts with the same two lines as my letter. Roses may be red, but violets are not blue. The thought brings a smile to my face.
It’s so hard to believe that a man I couldn’t stand less than a year ago is now my husband and the love of my life. I didn’t make it easy on him, that’s for sure. But he stuck by me and he fought for me. He showed me how much better life is with love in it. And my god do I love this man. With every cell in my body I do.
When Harris’ gaze comes to me, I see that his eyes are filled with unshed tears. The sight nearly makes my heart burst open.
I don’t have to ask what the card says, because I already know...
Roses may be red,
but violets are not BLUE.
