It wasn’t until much later that Ellie remembered to tease Jordan some more about the night at Derek’s.
“Really, you’re still worried about that?” Jordan asked, amused. “We talked. He thought I should get my act together and ask you to marry me. That worked out. I think he should call Kate, but that’s none of our business.”
“Speaking of which…” Not telling Derek was one thing, but Ellie wasn’t going to have secrets from her wife-to-be.
“She is thinking about coming back, so they can talk it out. You think they can make it work?”
“They better. They’ll have a wedding to attend soon,” Jordan said and pulled her close again.
* * * *
Jordan dreamed about the trailer that night, the time, one of the times, she’d been looking for her parents and couldn’t find them. The door wasn’t locked, so she held on to the stuffed teddy bear and continued her search outside. The next door neighbors had a loud argument that had kept her from sleeping all night. A woman was crying.
She was scared.
Obviously, that moment, Kathryn had been scared too, because when they found her almost wandering off into the nearby forest, her eyes were red-rimmed.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
The bitter reproach stung more than the slap itself.
Fast forward to a conversation with Bethany she’d regret for a long time to come—because she’d been drunk and scared, and for the life of her, she couldn’t find a reason to carry on with this. Bethany, of course, specialized in difficult cases, and she had her own issues as well.
“You wouldn’t do anything like that. You wouldn’t do that to me, right?” Jordan knew she had spooked herself already enough to walk away from the precipice, but that line had been thin, and Bethany had been there, reason enough to feel indebted to her for years to come.
Trapped.
She startled herself awake before her mind could take the nightmare any further. She wasn’t trapped any longer.
Instead, she was going to marry the woman she loved, and build a home with her. Jordan scooted closer to lay an arm around Ellie’s waist.
Life was good.
