by Alice Reeds
With a few steps she crossed the distance to Joe and pulled out the fake knife, the blade elongating as she took it out and then threw it aside, the blade and hilt sticky with fake blood. Reaching into one of her pockets, she took out a vial and her syringe, pushing the vial into it before pushing the needle into Joe’s arm just to be sure that the effect was still there. Once done, Gail stood up and walked toward the front of the ship and the door to get back inside, leaving Joe behind.
“You okay?” Lido asked as she walked into the room. Lido sat at the console watching the radar and a few other pieces of equipment just like he’d been instructed. The only answer he received was a quick nod.
“Go and take care of Joe,” she finally said and watched as the man silently left the room. Gail pulled up her laptop she’d stored away in one of the cupboards, put in on the closest table, and opened it. It took a moment until it was started up and ready for use.
Gail waited, time moving slowly. It didn’t take too long until a video call request appeared on her screen, the ring sounding way louder than it truly was in the otherwise quiet room. After she clicked Accept Call, the window transformed and expanded, the connection stabilizing enough for McCarty to look back at her.
“Did they believe you?” Gail asked.
McCarty smiled before she spoke. “They’re convinced they’re safe now. They saw me kill you. They’ll believe anything I tell them.”
“Do you have the implants?”
“Affirmative.”
“Proceed as planned: find out if they know about Berlin, and if so, how much.”

I’m not really good with words, she says after writing ninety-nine thousand words, but I’ll try to put my feelings into words. Saying thank you will never really be enough to express what I truly feel, those two words seemingly too simple, so how about writing them in every language I know without having to consult the internet:
Thank you. Dziękuje. Спасибо. Danke. Grazie. Gracias. Merci.
From first idea to finished novel it took around seven years. It was a long road, but thanks to my mom I didn’t have to travel it alone. Thank you for always being on my side, for encouraging me to give this idea a try, to go deeper, look further, and explore every aspect of the story and the characters. You’ve always believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself, and somehow you knew I could do it. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have given Echoes that final fateful try, would’ve shelved it instead, so thank you for giving me that push I needed.
Thank you so much to my two brilliant editors, Stephen Morgan and Lydia Sharp, without whom Echoes never would’ve evolved into what it is now. Thank you, Stephen, for giving this story a chance, for believing in Miles and Fiona, for not getting annoyed at my mile long emails, questions, and worries, for the things you’ve taught me that made me a better writer, and just everything you’ve done for me along the way. A big thank you also to Lydia for poking holes in plot points that needed that tiny bit more to be perfect, for scenes to come alive and for the characters to be even more complex, for seeing what the story could truly be with a little more work. I’m forever grateful for the hard work you’ve both done.
Thank you to every single person at Entangled that was involved with this story, the various stages of editing, proofreading, and reading it in general and giving your honest feedback, Melissa Montovani who did an amazing job at spreading the word, and the incredibly skilled Art Department for the beautiful cover. Without all of you, this never would have turned into a story that people would be able to buy and read, or even know about. You’re amazing and I am so grateful.
Thank you to Mia Siegert for being a wonderful friend and critique partner, for helping me tackle the ridiculous word count of my revisions, for being a cheerleader, and the first person to ever officially blurb something I wrote. Here’s to years more of friendship and story telling.
Another big thank you also goes to my best friend, Anthony Z. Davis, for listening to countless hours of whining or me going on and on about some scene or chapter, helping me out whenever I was stuck, reminding and encouraging me to not give up, or just cracking a joke whenever I needed to laugh or a little pick me up. I’ll never be able to express how much all of it means to me.
Thank you also to my sister from another mister, Delasi, for being an amazing friend and listening to me going on and on about writing, and not giving up on me despite the many times I was too absorbed by writing to text you back for days.
It was a lot of fun to set part of the story in Berlin, all these places I know so well and could just revisit whenever I needed to check some detail, so thank you, Berlin, I guess? You were the perfect stage for this story, though it’s a shame Miles and Fiona, and my readers, didn’t get to see more of you.
And last, but most certainly not least, I want to thank YOU, dear reader. Thank you for picking up Echoes, giving it a try and spending precious hours on reading about Fiona and Miles’s journey. It means a lot to me, and I truly hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
