Bedtimes and Broomsticks Page 22

by Amanda A. Allen

“Taken in by the police today. She stole some relic that had belonged to the McGovern family. She’s been making them pay for years to get it back. And that nice Lex Warder had been working on finding the criminals. And it was Becca. Becca Lovejoy. Old Mrs. Lovejoy is too sad for words.”

Scarlett, Gus, Harper, and the girls followed Mabel to a large booth in the back while Mabel’s gossip flowed non-stop.

“Who’d have thought it? Such a nice girl. Not like Lacey Monroe and Kelly Wattsy at all. Always had something nice to say. Always so quick to say hello and ask about my day. And she was a criminal the whole time. What is the world coming to?”

Scarlett didn’t dare look at the others and see their reaction. She was too busy trying to hide her own. Lex had stayed up, figured out who he was looking for and was gone before morning. All without saying goodbye.

She hadn’t expected him leaving to make her feel so empty. She hadn’t expected to feel quite so much. She wasn’t even sure what she was feeling. Only that she wanted to see him again. She took a deep breath, ordered a vegetarian omelet with avocado and bacon on the side and took a long, deep breath.

It was time to remind herself that she was home. That there was a new path in front of her, and she could trust to the path, to family, to the wind, and to friendship.

She looked around the table, grinned at her oldest friend, and tucked into her bacon.

  THE END

Hey! Thank you so much for reading Bedtimes. Since I’m a single mom like Scarlett, it was one of the truest things I’ve ever written. Raise your hand for when you found your kid peeing on a tree or running naked down the street. Or is that just me? *grins* If you enjoyed it, I would be so grateful for a review. Reviews mean a lot to writers like me as well as to readers.
