  Chapter 1

  Rawklix

I leaned back into the comfortable chair in Lortnam's palace ship where my brothers and I were all gathered, well some of us anyway. Jinurak and his new wife Ariana were currently squirreled away on the island he'd bought for her. He was up on the video screen, joining us via the internet. Manzar was joining us via internet as well, but he and his wife Andi were back home on Trilyn. He didn't blend in with the rest of the Humans quiet so well as the rest of us did.

"I miss home," I said, pouring a glass of wine made from my vineyards back home on Trilyn. "All of you have mated, isn't that enough?" I asked, taking a sip of my wine.

"You know Father wishes us all to be mated, Rawklix," Darbnix commented, shoving my socked feet off Lortnam's meeting table. "Have a little respect, this isn't your home where you can act the lay-about."

I set my feet on the floor and leaned forward. "It's been four years. Maybe my mate isn't here."

I knew how important it was for us to find mates. The women of Trilyn had been murdered by a virus unleashed on them. It had only effected the women of our race though, which was horrible. Now it was up to us, the Trilyn Princes to show that we could go on, we could find mates, and have offspring, and repopulate our planet with Human women we were genetically compatible with. My six brothers had already found their true mates. I was the only one left.

We'd come to Earth when I was nineteen, still too young to really care if I found my mate, but as the years have passed, and each of my brothers have found theirs, I have grown lonelier and lonelier. It hadn't been an easy thing coming here. There were Humans who hated us. Who had tried to stop us from finding our true mates, or just flat out tried to kill us. We promised the people of Earth a great deal of technology in exchange for allowing us to stay and search for the women we're supposed to be with, but even that wasn't enough to stop these Humans from trying to harm us. It was all rather disheartening and now I just wanted to go home.

"You must have patience, Rawklix. I did not think I would find my mate either." Lortnam smiled at me. "I mean Kelly very nearly ran off to Japan before I could meet her."

"In the four years I've been here, I've been with numerous Human women. Not one has been my mate." I shook my head. "I got so bored that Father made me find a hobby! I went and got one of their law degrees!" Of course getting the law degree was his suggestion, but still I'd done it.

"Which I thank you for, by the way, if it weren't for that, I might be locked up in some Human prison." Akrawn lifted a glass in cheers to him.

"Unlikely. Cat would have found a way to break you out."

"You've got to be kidding me. Cat would have been the first one to lock the cage. She's a brilliant SFPD officer, there is no way she'd have broken me out."

"Okay, maybe 'break you out' was the wrong term, but she would have worked to get you released anyway. She knew you didn't steal that necklace."

"True. She did work hard to help solve everything. You being verse in the laws here helped though."

"I guess." I took another drink. The fruit used for the wine was sweet and fragrant, and only served to make me miss the lush tropics of my territory on Trilyn more. The Solarin Islands were an enormous archipelago on Trilyn. They were a tropical paradise and I missed them dearly. I tried to visit home as much as I could. I made 'supply' runs as often as I could justify it, just so I could visit.

"Maybe you just aren't in the right area to meet your mate, Rawklix. Maybe instead of living in Boston, Massachusetts, you should move somewhere more like the Solarin Islands?" Gardax suggested.

  "Such as where?" I asked.

"The Caribbean is lovely," Jinurak said, turning the screen so we could see the view from his balcony.

"I don't think the Caribbean could stand having two of us in their vicinity," I chuckled, "but maybe you both have a point. Maybe I will move my palace down to Florida. Perhaps I will find my mate in the Keys?"

"I've seen images of Miami, it's a big city, a great many beautiful women there," Manzar commented.

"Then Miami it is. Surely, I will find my mate there." I set my glass down on the table and poured another. Lifting it I said, "To finding my mate, at last."

"To finding your mate," my brothers chorused.

We ended our council meeting and I said goodbye to my brothers and their wives who had been having coffee together in Lortnam and Kelly's living room. I got into my transport ship and headed back up to Boston. It was an hour trip from Baltimore, so I decided to take a nap. When we finally arrived and I debarked, I headed straight for my bridge.

"Prince Rawklix, what may we do for you?" the head of my ship's security, Darlib asked as I entered.

"I want the ship prepared for flight. We are heading down to Miami."

  "Miami, my Prince?" Darlib asked.

"Yes, my brothers and I have determined my mate might be found in an environment similar to the Solarin Islands."

"Then we shall leave as soon as the rest of the crew return, my Prince."

"Is there a particular part of Miami you wish to land in, my Prince?" my pilot, Jenser questioned. "I will need to check out a flight plan."

"I will have a look and get back to you in just a bit, for now, let's worry about getting the ship prepared."

  "Yes, sir." Jenser nodded.

I headed to my quarters and when I opened the door I was greeted by my personal man, Fellnix. "How was your meeting, my Prince?"

"It went well, Fellnix. We're preparing the ship to depart for Miami. Can you bring me my tablet? I need to do a little research to find out where we might land and make our new residence."

"Of course, sir. Shall you wish to have your dinner in the living room or dining room?"

Most days I chose to eat in the living room in front of the tv. Unless I had company, then depending on who the company was, I either ate in my bedroom or at the dining room table. "The l
iving room, I think, Fellnix."

"As you wish, sir. It won't be a moment."

As I settled down on the L-shaped leather couch, and switched on the flat screen tv, he returned with the tablet and then left me to my own devices. On the tv was the game Humans called Baseball. I had come to enjoy watching them on occasion. I'd even been to a few games here in Boston. Met a few beautiful young women there who joined me in bed for a good time after, but none of them had been my mate.

I pulled up the city of Miami on the tablet and began to look through different sites. I checked out North Shore Park, but it seemed to be a quieter area, with the older crowd of beach goers, not exactly what I was looking for. I searched the coast of Miami Beach looking for a spot where I'd find the women closer to my age, those in their early twenties like me. Flamingo Park had a nice area I could settle, but it wasn't on the beach and if I was going to be hosting parties, I wanted that beach front view, so I kept looking. Finally I noticed a perfect curved area lined in palm trees on the beach. It would be the ideal spot to land.

"Your dinner, sir." Fellnix set a covered dish on the table in front of me. "May I get you anything else?"

"Pour me a glass of wine, would you?"

"Of course, sir." He moved to the wine cabinet and pulled out a fresh bottle, pouring me a glass. "Here you are, sir."

I took a sip and gave him a nod. "Take this to Jenser on the bridge, let him know this is where I'd like to settle us. He'll need to make some calls and get us clearance. Tell him do whatever is necessary, this is where I want to be."

Fellnix took the tablet and said, "Of course, my Prince. I shall return momentarily."

I picked up my plate and pulled off the cover. Fellnix was a fair hand in the kitchen and had cooked up all my favorites from Trilyn, so I dove into the hearty meal with pleasure. I'd finished by the time he'd reappeared.

"Security Chief Darlib is making the calls now, my Prince. Everyone has returned and we shall be taking off in about ten minutes. I fear that may interrupt your viewing of the game. Would you like me to ask them to wait?"

I glanced at the screen and shook my head. "It is no matter, I'm not even really watching, it's just background noise at this point. I'll just put in a DVD instead. I'd rather be in Miami without delay."

"As you wish, my Prince." Fellnix cleaned up my dinner plate and returned to the kitchen. He returned a moment later with another smaller plate. "Dessert, my Prince?"

I took the plate from him and smiled. "You spoil me, Fellnix."

He smiled and gave me a small bow of his head. "It is my pleasure, my Prince."

We landed exactly where I wished about two hours later. Our landing apparently caused a stir on the beach, drawing a crowd of partiers, anxious to see which of the Trilyn Princes had landed in their midst. I'd changed into a pair of blue shorts and a light weight white sweater, and then went out to meet the people.

"It's Prince Rawklix!" several women called when I stepped out onto the beach. "Welcome to Miami, Prince Rawklix!"

I grinned and spent the evening charming them all, dancing and partying along with them. This was my type of crowd. I considered bringing out the Tora Flower that I grew on my ship. It was a known aphrodisiac on Trilyn, and I always had a supply on hand here, just for special occasions when I really wanted to get the party going. However, this group was already having a good time, so I supposed it wasn't really needed.

As the evening turned to night, I found myself leading a pair of blondes back to my suite for the night. Neither were genetically matched to me, I had Fellnix scan them both just in case, but they were both beautiful and didn't mind sharing my bed for the night.

The next morning, I fed them breakfast and sent them on their way with murmurs of, "I'll call you," even knowing I wouldn't. Sighing, I sank down on the couch again and turned the tv on. I randomly flipped stations, barely pausing on any of them, but then something caught my eye. It was just a flash and I'd already scrolled past, so I had to back track, but then, there she was. Nora Morse the witch who kept trying to kill my brothers and me! How was she allowed to walk about on national tv? How was she not locked up in a jail cell?

I stared at the screen attempting to figure out why she was on the tv. I turned it up and listened.

"Yes, it is a lovely feat of engineering, isn't it?" Nora was saying to the reporter as she looked back at the building behind her.

It was a castle like building with a high tower you'd see in one of those Human fairy tales.

"What made you decide to build your company here in Miami, Ms. Morse?" the reporter asked.

"Well, I've always had a love for the sun and a whimsical nature, so I thought, why not Miami?"

"And you, Miss—" the reporter turned to a lovely young woman behind Nora and focused on her face.

"She's beautiful," I murmured, staring at the screen. I'd never seen another Human woman as lovely as her. She was tall, willowy and slim, with golden hair that fell well past her waist, and deep brown eyes that had gold flecks in them making them sparkle. She smiled and it was like the whole world lit up.

"My adopted daughter, Laura, she's very shy," Nora said, stepping in front of the girl. "She works for me here at the Tower."

Something about this girl drew me like no other woman had. My heart raced and I knew without a doubt I had to find a way to meet her.

  Chapter 2

  Laura

Sitting high up looking out over the island, watching in the distance as the people went from one place to the next, living their lives, I just wanted to be a part of it, but Mother was having none of it. Four years ago, she'd bought the land an old country club had sat on and tore it down then built this fortress, instilling me in the high tower under the claims that too many people wanted to kidnap me. Had even tried to kidnap me in the past, and that was why my memories from beyond four years ago were missing.

Try as I might, I just could not recall anything that had happened before turning fifteen. Sometimes in my dreams, I pictured a life living on a farm deep in the heart of the United States, but then I'd wake here and look around at my stone walls and know that was impossible. Mother said that we'd always lived here in Miami, not here exactly, not in the Tower, but at another home in Miami. I couldn't recall it either.

My mind drifted back over the interview Mother had done just recently. She'd allowed me out of the Tower for the short time the reporters were there doing a story on her and the tech firm she'd built here. An extension of the virtual reality firm she'd had on an island somewhere in the Gulf she'd never allowed me to go to. She'd said it was too dangerous for me.

It was her words that gave me pause. She'd said, she'd always had a love for the sun and a whimsical nature, so why not Miami? As if we hadn't always lived here. It was puzzling and I really wished I could remember anything, something of where I'd been before four years ago.

The day was lovely, sunny as usual, and I let my mind drift into daydreams of escaping my tower and going out into the world and really living. Maybe I'd go to college, meet a handsome man, get married, have beautiful babies and have a wonderful life.

"Laura, come away from there now, you're too exposed."

I turned to see Mother entering my room. "Mother, it's been four years, surely the threats to me are no longer valid. Why can't I go to college and—"

"We've had this discussion a million times, Laura! It's too dangerous. Do you want to lose your memories again? That's what happened the last time, after all. Do you wish to have no memories of me at all?" she pouted, sticking her lower lip out and giving me sad eyes.

"Of course not, it's just… I could help you so much more if I actually went to college, learned even more about computer tech and programming… if you would just allow—"

"I can teach you all that you need to know, darling. I am after all a computer genius, am I not?"

  "You are, but—"

"Enough. I am done discussing this. Now, I thought I'd come up here and spend time with
you, but you've put me in a mood, so I will just go back down to work where at least my employees enjoy my company." With that she stormed out of my room, slamming and locking the door behind her.

Feeling tears burn my eyes, I sobbed and threw myself down on my bed, crying myself to sleep. My crying jag led me to drift into a series of short little dreams.

The dirt beneath my feet felt good, soft and warm as I ran across the ground toward my friends. Melanie and Dana and I were headed to the apple orchard at our neighbor's house to pick apples. "Hi!" I greeted them. "Ready to find the best apples for the pies?" I wanted to surprise Mama with an apple pie for her birthday. Melanie and Dana and I were going to make the pies at Melanie's house with her mama's help. We were each making one, but mine was going to be special, because it was for Mama.

"Yeah, Mama said we'd need nice ripe ones," Melanie explained. "At least seven per pie, so we need twenty-one apples. I brought you a pail." She handed me a pink pail.

"You sure Mr. Shrouder won't make us pay for the apples?" Dana asked, nervously.

Mama and I didn't have much, just the farm, but Mr. Shrouder was nice and always let us play in his orchard and pick apples for free. "Yeah, he said anytime we needed some, to help ourselves. Mama gives him eggs and milk when we have extra, so he's happy to let us have them."
