That stopped Becca’s head shaking, and she paused, looking up at me. “Oh. You do?”

“I do,” I assured her, stroking her hair. “In fact, I was the only one that remembered we were supposed to have Weather Mages. That might be why the Gardeners sent me for you.”

I had no doubt she would think about this more later, but her eyes kept being drawn back to Garth, as a magnet to steel. Part of it was because she understood exactly who this man was. The Gardeners would have given her a very strong impression of him. But as I looked at him, I saw him with new eyes. In the past year, Garth had grown into his roles. He didn’t look nervous or somewhat lost anymore. Even kneeling on the ground, eye to eye with another mage, he seemed to quietly radiate power and authority.

Garth extended a hand to her. “Won’t you come with me, Becca? I promise to guide you as much as I can, teach you everything I know. The only danger you’ll face in Strae will be from Shad’s pranks.”

I chuckled and didn’t deny it.

Becca tentatively took his hand. “Tail can come too?”

Garth regarded the feline sitting patiently at her feet. “He certainly can. In fact, I insist upon it. While we cross the bridge, maybe you can tell me how you came to have a Jaunten cat as your familiar?”

She lowered her voice to a loud whisper. “Shad did it.”

Garth shot me a dry look. “Now, how did I know that would be the answer? I suppose the Jaunten horse behind you is your doing as well?”

  I shrugged unrepentantly. “Whoops?”

Shaking his head, Garth regained his feet in an easy, smooth motion. “I truly want the full tale now. But that can wait until we are settled in, I think. Well, Professor, Professora, Magess, and Master Tail, shall we go to Strae Academy?”

  About the Author

Over thirty years ago, in the hills of Tennessee, a nice, unsuspecting young couple had their first child. Their home has since then been slowly turned into a library as their daughter consistently brought books home over the years.

No one was surprised when she grew up, went to college, and got her Bachelor's in English. Despite the fact that she has a degree, and looks like a mature young woman, she's never grown out of her love for dragons, fairies and other fantastical creatures. With school done, she's ready to start her career, hopefully by blending two of her loves: books and fantasy.
