Fire in the Blood Page 15

by Barbara Cartland

Even as she spoke, she remembered that the Earl had wanted not only to kiss her but also to make love to her and she gave a little shiver.

As if he knew what she was thinking Silvester said,

“Exactly! That is why, my darling, you will never try to deceive me or anybody else again. And never, never play the part that your sister asked of you! I consider it was an outrageous thing for her to ask you to do!”

“She – she only asked me to – go to a funeral!”

“Where I was waiting for you!”

“I could not have – guessed that you would have done anything as shocking as – coming to my bedroom!”

He turned round so that he could look down at her where she lay against the pillows.

Her hair was streaming over her shoulders as it had the night he had come to her room at The Castle and her eyes shining in the light of the fire looked up at him.

“I knew in that moment,” he said, “that however long it took, whatever the difficulties, you would be mine.”

“Did you – really feel like that? I thought when I – sent you away that I had – lost you for ever!”

“If one wants something enough,” Silvester said, “even the Gods cannot prevent us from having it. I wanted you and I was prepared to sacrifice the whole world to gain you!”

“Oh, darling, I am so glad!” Pandia cried, “but – just supposing – believing me to be married – you had gone off to Morocco and forgotten me?”

“I would never have forgotten you and, like the Gods, I was prepared to fight in every way I knew to get you, even if it meant carrying you away by force!”

  Pandia laughed.

Then she realised that the way he had spoken with a determination that was so much a part of him had brought again the fire to his eyes and she was aware that his heart was beating against hers.

She could feel the flames flickering again within herself, moving up from her breast to her lips.

It was the fire that raced in her blood and which Selene had been right in saying was something their father had given them.

It was a fire, which was not only very human, but also Divine.

Her husband’s lips came down on hers and, as she felt her whole body surrender itself to him, the flames leapt higher and higher.

“You are mine,” he cried passionately. “Mine, and I worship you.”

“Love me – Oh, Silvester – love me,” Pandia whispered.

Then once again he carried her as if in a chariot towards the stars and, as he made her his, she knew that their love was glorious, magnetic, irresistible and no power on earth could withstand it.
