  “Now I know why Forrester kicked me out of Summer­land,” Dutton once said to Kate. “He got everything he wanted, namely you. And he couldn’t have done it without me. Don’t you see? Since you wouldn’t come to him, he had to come back to you.”

  “Well,” Kate answered, “if you’re going to be haunted, a menage à trois is the way to do it.”

  It was a sophisticated joke but, to their astonishment, the boy laughed uproariously. Dutton thought it a pity that he would someday have to learn to talk and to get along in life. In a few years he would forget all he knew. Maybe that’s the way it is for everybody.
