Lingerie on the Floor (The Londonaire Brothers Series Book 1) Page 19

  “Come on, grab your jacket.”

Okay, he is talking about a bike ride.

I hike upstairs to our bedroom and grab my riding jacket from the closet and slide on my sleek black boots. Not gonna lie, I kinda feel like a badass when I put this leather jacket on. And I’ve been thinking about getting my own motorcycle license since Drew’s agreed to teach me. But I’m trying to pace myself with all my new brave decisions.

Drew meets me at the door and we walk hand in hand out to the elevator. “I’ll grab the bike and meet you out front. I’ve got a surprise for you.”

“Okay,” I smirk. We do love our surprises.

I kiss him before I step off the elevator and walk through the lobby. Outside the air has cooled and the leaves have turned bright orange and red. I love that we get to experience a real fall in this city, unlike the endless summer in L.A.

It isn’t long before Drew pops out of the underground garage riding Black Jack and pulls up to the front, wedging the bike between two parked cars. He shuts off the bike. His hair looks so sexy when it falls around his ears after he takes his helmet off.

“What are you doing? I thought we were going for a ride,” I ask as he dismounts the bike.

“We will. Here. Take this.” Drew hands over my helmet like it’s a bowl of soup he’s afraid to spill on the sidewalk. “There’s something inside.” I squint my eyes, peeking inside the dark helmet. A glossy wood box sits in the middle.

“What is it?” I ask in awe, pulling it out like a magic rabbit.

“Open it,” he says with the cutest look on his face.

My heart pounds wildly in my chest. Maybe it’s earrings or a pendant. Maybe it’s not jewelry at all and it’s some other tiny trinket. But, of course, when a man hands you a ring-sized box you can’t help but think that it might be something life changing.

I open the box gently. A cushion-style engagement ring glistens inside.

“Oh, my God,” I whisper. It’s got to be at least six carats. My jaw falls to the floor. I look at Drew as he lowers down to one knee.

My hands tremble as my heart flutters in my chest like a butterfly just freed from her cocoon. “Drew,” I say, my hand slightly covering my mouth.

He smiles and takes my hand. “Kate, I didn’t know when you spilled your martini down my pants—the first time—that you were going to be the best unexpected surprise of my life. My world is so vibrant with you in it. You’re the one I want to ride with always. So, Kate Eleanor Golden, will you marry me?”

Tears blur my vision and spill onto my cheeks when I blink. “Yes! Yes! I’ll marry you.”

Drew jumps to his feet and wraps me in his arms. I feel his heart pounding just as much, if not more than mine. He takes the wooden box from my hand and slips the ring on my finger. It’s a perfect fit, just like him.

He kisses my lips and I almost can’t believe that the two most un-committable people are about to commit to a life with one another. The doorman outside our building begins to applaud and he’s joined by a few passersby on the street. We send them a friendly wave and I can’t stop grinning.

“Now are you ready for that ride?” he asks, arching his brow.

“You know I am,” I say, popping on my helmet. Drew takes my hand and we ride west toward the sunset.

AMANDA(ah-MAHN-dah)- Latin- Meaning lovable or worthy of love.

Fitting. I've always had an affinity for love.

Being born in sunny San Diego in the mid 80s to a young military couple gave me plenty of insight into the dynamics of a romantic relationship. Somewhere between moving coasts every three years, I found myself engrossed in fairytale romances and dressing up like a bride.

My first real love was writing. By my sophomore year in a new high school in Virginia, I had a slew of short stories, songs, poems, and articles to my name. Writing was fun. It was a way to get the emotions, dialogue, and pictures out of my head, and create a destiny for my characters.

I had no intention of making a career in writing, because it wasn’t what I did, it was who I was. In reality, I wanted to be an actress. Ah, to be the face of someone else’s authored story. The plan was to move in with my aunt in L.A. after graduation, but I had a change of heart.

Instead, I stayed with my high school sweetheart (now husband) and attended a film school in Norfolk, VA. It was at this school that I discovered my love for writing screenplays and felt compelled to follow that path. But . . . as the practical girl I was brought up to be, I decided to go to a real university. While working full time, I completed my BA in Psychology in four and a half years. Becoming a couples therapist had always been my “backup” career and there I was on my way to solving love's most complicated quandaries one couple at a time.

With all my new free time after graduation, I decided to turn my full-length screenplay into a novel in hopes it would help my screenplay sell. I think I was in the middle of writing chapter two when I realized that everything I had ever written was to prepare me for that moment when I knew I was a novelist. Talk about the affirmation of my life. Now my plan is to solve love's most complicated quandaries one novel at a time.
