  Humbled by her admission, Brett shook his head, speechless. “I’m just a construction worker, Alaina. I don’t work on Wall Street. I have no money for fancy weekend getaways or caviar.”

  “I don’t want all that, Brett.” She cupped his chin with both her hands.

  Hearing her say his real name sent shudders of bliss through his body.

  Alaina pulled his head down to hers. “All I want is you.”

  “I want you, too.” Brett stared straight into her eyes. “You challenge me in ways I should have challenged myself. You’ve shown me I can have a life after tragedy. That I have a place in this big city- and it’s by your side.”

  They kissed, and the construction workers hooted behind them. Brett picked Alaina up and twirled her around. All around them, the presence of his parents surrounded them with love.

  He’d build that cabin with her, and they’d live there in the summers when the opera was taking a break. Maybe someday, he’d start another logging company when the forest on his family’s lands grew back. The future shone brighter than it had since the fire. Finally, with Alaina’s help, he could move on with his life.
