“What are you playing at, old woman? After everything, you still refuse to involve yourself in the matters of the Loas? You can’t maintain your self-imposed exile any longer!”
She looked at me and pursed her wrinkled lips. “I suppose I deserve that, and you’re right, da time for impartiality has passed.”
My eyes narrowed at the woman. She was sharing a meaningful stare with Damballah, who seemed to have recovered well enough.
“What do you plan to do now?” Tyrique asked as he tried to console Brigitte.
The two of them had a unique connection and I didn’t know quite what to make of it. Though, I’d admit I was happy for the two of them. They might need each other in the fight to come.
New Orleans was under siege by the Bacalou and even more innocent people were being hurt by the minute. I didn’t know what was waiting for us there, but I knew that was where we needed to go. Someone had to help those poor people. Samedi would likely use it as his new seat of power, reveling in the chaos that would ensue.
I looked to Rhys, who was stretching out his limbs. I glanced at each of the faces gathered. Each was a face I’d grown to depend on and cherish. Most of all, I’d found some semblance of a family. Damballah, despite his assault, stood tall, his eyes overflowing with pride.
“We need to go home.”
