"Rise Of The
Snow Queen”
Book One:
“The Polar Bear King”
The first book from the new “Rise Of The Snow Queen” four part series by author G.W. Mullins.
G.W. Mullins has taken timeless folklore and crafted it into a new book series meant for adults. His updated take on the Polar Bear King and Snow Queen pay homage to the stories we all loved as children while making them more adventurous and not always allowing for a “happily ever after” ending.
The newly crowned King Valeman refuses to marry an evil witch, who reveals herself to be the infamous Snow Queen. His refusal to align himself with the dark forces causes her to cast an enchantment upon him.
Her unbreakable spell changes him beyond belief. “By light one way, by night another. Your form will change you will soon discover. By day a beast of a bear you will be, at night a man while others sleep. To break this spell you much achieve, the love of another while being a beast.”
Valeman is transformed into the Polar Bear King and given seven years to find true love or the enchantment will be permanent.
Vengeance
A Paranormal Murder Mystery
“Mystery, Murder, Paranormal Events, and a story that leaves you guessing as the bodies stack up.” – Matthew Trent OutLoud Magazine
An excerpt from Vengeance
A light fog floated like a white blanket above the ground as the shovel ripped apart the green grass that was to become a grave. Darkness clung to him, like a shroud as the shadowy hooded figure dug quickly to avoid the light of morning. With every scrape of the shovel the hole grew deeper and the figure looked more distraught. A storm of sinister emotion rolled across the stranger's face. Killing someone was the easy part, getting rid of the body was a bit harder.
As the hole became large enough for a body, the figure turned and headed to the house. He moved swiftly through the fog to where on the back porch, wrapped in a sheet, lay the body of a girl. As the figure bent over to pick her up, the sheet unraveled and an arm emerged from within. The silver moon shone down on the scene of horror. A golden bracelet slid down her wrist and reflected the moon’s light. As the figure looked down in anger, the bracelet was just a painful reminder of betrayal.
Wrapping the sheet back around the cold mass, the figure carried the life-less body to the hole and placed her deep inside. As mounds of dirt covered the sheet, the guilt raged deep inside. Death’s cold grip had come more than once that day. The police knew about the first one, they could not be allowed to find a second body.
The fog burned off the land as the first light of day found the hooded figure planting a new garden where the torn earth had become a grave. As the figure looked around the beautiful garden, a feeling came on, one that said it was over. If no one could find the body then no one could call it murder.
As the figure walked around the house to put the tools in the back of the truck, a face of a young blond girl appeared in the window. She watched intently as the figure moved about his business. She pushed against the glass in attempt to free herself from house that had become her tomb. As the tail gate closed on the bed of the truck, the figure looked back at the house. The girl beat her fists as hard as she could on the window. She screamed as loud as she could, but no sound was heard. There was only a light chirping of morning birds and the crunch of footsteps walking away.
Tears ran down her face as she pressed her face against the glass and rested her arm on the window seal. The bracelet she was wearing slid down her arm and as it hit her wrist reflected the bright light of the morning
sun. For a moment the reflection caught the attention of the figure. And then the truck pulled off down the long gravel driveway. The girl fell to the floor and beat her fists against the wall, but no one could hear her.

“A house is never still in darkness to those who listen intently; there is a whispering in distant chambers, an unearthly hand presses the snib of the window, the latch rises. Ghosts were created when the first man woke in the night.” — J.M. Barrie (Scottish novelist and playwright, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan.)
Before
They arrived at the old chapel just as night fell. Jen could actually see the stars from time to time. It was the first night that the rain had not been pelting down. She enjoyed the quiet. The clouds outside were moving in and out. In between clouds the light from the moon would shine through the stained-glass windows and warm the room with its glow. It made the whole room look colored like a rainbow. Jen looked around and smiled.
"This is nice," she said
"Yeah, I'm glad we are here."
"Look just in case something happens, I just wanted to say thank-you."
"For what?" Daniel asked.
"For a lot of things, but mostly for showing me that it is Ok to be happy. I haven't been this happy in a long time. It's mostly because of you."
"I feel the same way. I never fell in love when I was alive, I'm glad if it had to happen in death, that it was with you."
Just as Daniel finished his last words, light started to seep through the cracks in the doorway. The keyhole shot a ray into the room like a laser. The windows rattled and the door vibrated as the floor rumbled like an earth quake was ripping apart the ground beneath their feet. Above the din they heard the cawing of bids that had gathered just outside the windows. They were all ravens and all as black as night.
The door flew open and swirls of light caused a wind to gush through every corner of the room. It was different than before, not like when the light came for her grandmother. The wind was forceful and gusting. It felt like a storm front coming through.
As the wind blew, paintings ripped from the wall. Jen ran to take Daniel's hand, just as one of the paintings struck her in the forehead, knocking her unconscious. She fell to the floor not knowing what had happened to her.
Daniel turned wanting to help Jen, but there was nothing he could do. When he realized she was out cold, he pulled her up onto a pew and tried to get her out of the way of the debris. Then he turned to the light. "So, you want me.... you better know I am not going down without a fight." With that said, Daniel tapped into all the energy he had and generated a shield around himself, just as he had done to protect Jen.
The winds beat in his direction pummeling him in an attempt to weaken the shield. The light from the vortex grew brighter and became blinding as bolts of lightning struck the floor all around his feet. With every second it encompassed more and more of the room. Daniel knew he could not keep up the fight forever. He fought long and hard, and with every bit of energy he had. He just couldn't give up; he would not abandon Jen. His energy flickered and wore thin in spots and then the light broke through. Just as his light started to fade and disintegrate, Jen gained consciousness.
She sat up and realized what was happening. Jen knew she had been unconscious for a long time. She had to take action, it couldn't end this way. "I won't let you take him," she screamed, as she ran into the path of the light. "Jen no!" Daniel screamed just as the light engulfed her. And in an instant, Jen's body disappeared from sight, she was gone. Daniel fell to the ground, depleted of strength and energy; he raised his hands to his head. The pain pounding through him was almost unbearable. He had to pull himself together, but with his changing form and new abilities, he really had no idea how to come out of it.
Inside the light, Jen noticed there was no strong wind. Just like the eye of a hurricane, it was calm and everything was peaceful. 'Why is it this way?' Jen wondered. She walked for what seemed like forever. It was like entering room after room. Every one of them was like a place she had seen in life. She wondered if this was what they meant when they said your life passed before you when you just as you die. And then a familiar face appeared to her. Just like before, the vision appeared and took form. It was her grandmother. She was there in the light with Jen.
Jen knew at that moment she had to be dead. She had sacrificed herself to save Daniel. And then she thought to herself, 'Wow Jen you finally find true love and then you go and kill yourself to save him. How is this fair?' Jen looked up at the figure as it took its final form. She was confused at first, but then it made sense. Her Grandmother had entered the light; she would be there. But why hadn't she crossed over? Grandma smiled at her in her kind understanding way and spoke.
"Jen my darling girl, why are you here? You have to leave. You don't belong here."
"No, I have to stop the light; I won't let it take Daniel."
"Sweetheart, the light comes for those when it is their time. And now is not your time dear."
"You mean I am still alive? It's not too late. I have to help Daniel. Grandma, I can't let him go, I love him."
"I know you do, but you cannot forfeit your life to save his. It won’t change his fate."
"What else can I do?" Jen asked as tears formed in her eyes.
"Go back my dear, fight for him and then live your life. You dying here will change nothing. But you have to go soon before they know you are here."
"There has to be a way to stop all this," Jen pleaded.
"There is nothing humanly possible that you can do."
"Wait if it is not humanly possible, is it possible for a spirit?" Jen whispered.
"Perhaps, tell Daniel to fight the Shadows within the light. He will understand when the time comes. It will mean he has to enter the light though. But I have told you too much, they may already be listening. For now, you have to go."
The Shadows began to form around where they stood. Grandma looked on in fear and knew what she had to do. If Jen stayed for a moment more, they would claim her life. She mustered all the energy she had, and with one wave of her hand sent Jen flying backwards from the light and back to Daniel's side. Her voice echoed
out of the light, "Fight my children, I will watch over you from this side."
She turned to Daniel, "You can beat it, Grandma said you have to fight the Shadows within the light. She said you would know when it happened." Daniel smiled at her and took her hand, "You have to go now. I have to do this alone." And he moved her out of the way of the light and walked towards it. He decided that fighting it all night would wear him down and if he was going to have to fight, then it was time. Daniel looked back one last time at Jen, "I will always love you. Remember that. No matter what happens here today."
The light was too bright for Jen to see anything anymore. Daniel walked inside of it and it encompassed him. She wished there was something she could do, but there was not. The light began to pulse and change in form. The wind that had filled the chapel died down. Jen heard the crackle of static electricity sounding through the place. And in an instant, the light was gone. There was nothing ... no light and no Daniel, just an empty space full of pain.
Jen cried out his name in fear. It couldn't end this way. He couldn't be gone. She looked around for some sign of him. And then she sat down on a pew and ran her hand up to the ring that still dangled from her necklace. She pressed it between her hands and trembled. It wasn't supposed to end this way. Grandma said it could be stopped.
She hung her head and cried. Even though she knew it could happen this way, she still wasn't prepared. There was nothing she could do. She moved down on the floor of the chapel and pulled her knees up to her chest. She took the ring and removed it from the chain. She stared at it and the stone which was the same color as Daniel's light. But the ring was different now; the stone seemed to have a faint glow. Perhaps it was a last sign of love that Daniel had left behind for her.
She stood up and collected herself. Jen walked out of the door of the old chapel and looked around. The winds had died down completely. There was nothing out of the ordinary any more except the black birds that seemed to be perched on several of the tress. As she moved, she felt as if their eyes were watching her every move. She knew something about this was wrong. Maybe, she thought, it was time to go home. But where was home? She didn't have one, not anymore.
