‘I could not have done this without you,’ he said, standing also, taking her hand and kissing the back of it.
‘Then it’s very fortunate that I was here,’ she said, snatching her hand back, wishing he wouldn’t keep kissing her. It muddled her thinking and made her want…well, the unattainable.
‘And now you seem to have taken responsibility for my sisters as well as Grandmamma. I hope you do not expect an increase in your salary,’ he added in a teasing tone.
‘Ah, dash it all, you have seen through my stratagem,’ she said, laughing over her shoulder at him as she left the room.
