“An old fairy-tale,” Prince Alec laughed.
“Where is this place,” Noleann whispered.
“Only Mayens Hall will tell you,” Fallqron shot. “It is too long a journey from here. The pools of the water in this mysterious place are said to bring life back into the old, restore youth. The waters are said to have a mysterious magic. No one has ever seen this place.”
“One man might know,” Shadown stated.
“Who is this person?” Arieal asked.
“His name is Allenor. He is a Mystic, but I am unsure if he even lives. He used to travel these parts. He was said to wield the dark arts, he remained out of the affairs of others. He gathered information, monitored and moved on. He is said to come from the Southlands below Sloping Spikes.” He looked at Prince Grandur, Noleann and Arieal with distrust in his eyes. “Do you know him?”
The three examined him with weary expressions and explained that they did not know the Mystic. Prince Grandur and Noleann then explained how the Reunion Wars came about and how the Mystic Zandu had marched his armies from Wolven Oak to the Southlands. Shadown did not recognize the name Dunnganon and never heard of him. Shadown relayed the fact that there were other Mystic's who may be able to assist and explained that their keep was Mayens Hall. The Mountaineer rubbed his face and shook his head disconsolately. Quaid shook his head in a negative stance as Prince Grandur excused himself and grasped Noleann. They shared a brief smile and she hugged him.
“I was afraid,” she managed briefly, blinking her clear eyes.
“You ran, what happened to the staff?”
“I don't remember. I keep having a dream. I see you on a bridge and you fall into a pit. There are other dreams. I see a girl who I've never met, and she leads us into the mouth of a cave and there's mist. Suddenly a dragon comes forth spewing fire out. In another dream I see a man, his face dark concerned. He is angry then he vanishes. The one dream that haunts me the most is those dark wraith-like things. They come for us. I also know that you seek me in the dream that is how it happens. I will become lost to you. You will find me and attempt to rescue us then we both die,” her words faded as she refused to believe the inevitable.
“In your dream, do you recognize the place?” he asked with concern.
“No, I don't recognize the place. I do know that those things will come and attempt to destroy us. I'm aware that we are all in danger. Perhaps it is better that I leave. It is time for us to return to Shannon.”
“I don't know what to do,” Payne Axel sounded.
“Payne Axel,” she smiled, “you always know what to do. Just look at Prince Alec, he’s your brother. You both have a lot to talk about. He is part of your family, your bloodline.”
“Possibly,” Prince Grandur added. “What about us?”
Noleann turned away for a moment and peered directly into his eyes. “I need to be who I am. I must go my way. I am a Bounty Huntress. That skill is in my blood, I've been trained. I will go home after I find someone to assist Quaid. I feel responsible for this situation. Maybe this Allenor can assist him.”
“Maybe this place that you seek may be familiar to the others,” he resigned himself. “Noleann, we cannot split up. We need to make this journey and return home.”
“Noleann you are not responsible,” Gabreal glanced over directly and strode toward them, her face mixed with some emotions. “I will be responsible for him. I shall stay here with him. Quaid cannot make the journey. He has been drained, he is exhausted, the Blue Star has nearly destroyed him. I don't want him hurt anymore. He’s lost everything, his friends, his family and part of his life. I want you to take this cursed thing from here. Go and leave with it. Lady Saunder, Prince Alec and I will assist him. We can wait, you can send a messenger.”
“I don't like it,” Prince Grandur repeated, his face dark and twisted. Gabreal dropped the stone in Noleann's hands, it shimmered as if tempting her to use it. A flash of light gleamed for a moment as the three peered in wonder. The stone appeared to mirror a dark mist that took form and showed images. Slowly and hideously the images of men fighting occurred, and a Crimson Seeker passing into a place. Destruction surged and everything in its wake was destroyed. Noleann went to hesitate and pull the thing back, but Prince Grandur held her hand firm. Images blended as a dark stone castle pierced the sky with mountains and a huge dam. Explosions flashed as Ogres pressed on and valley burned. The stark dark face circled and swirled, it was Dayven and a man's fierce roughened face flickered, and the mirror darkened, replaced by the smooth surface of the stone.
“What does it mean? Who are they and why doesn't the magic affect you?” Gabreal expressed some deep-seated anger.
Noleann refused to answer, grasped the stone and moved away. Gabreal and Prince Grandur stood there in silence.
The decisions had been made. Quaid would go with the Bounty Huntress and Prince Grandur. Prince Alec decided to aid them along with Shadown.
King Fallqron and Lady Saunder would remain. Arieal decided to assist and wait as a messenger. The remaining Gnomes would send word to the cities. The small company would seek out the place called Mayens Hall. Quaid would have to go with them. Gabreal argued that Quaid should remain several times in a protective manner, after several minutes and a heart-to-heart discussion, the Mountaineer persuaded her to remain.
Within a few hours the company rummaged as many supplies as possible. The journey would be made by wolf-sled. Three teams for two were assembled at the mouth of the exit. Noleann and Prince Grandur would share a sled, while a Gnome assisted Quaid, and one assisted Prince Alec. King Fallqron, Lady Saunder, Gabreal and Ariel stood as they watched the dog teams go off, leaving a trail behind. The small glow of lanterns could be seen glowing in the distance and as the sled crested a steep hill, the faint yellow light disappeared with onslaught of howling winds and blinding snow.
They were gone.
