Promised to the Alien Page 7

Makayla had to ask her questions and prepare for the worst.

  Chapter Eight

“WHAT DO YOU WANT TO eat?” Falcon asked. He watched her turn blank eyes to him.

He walked over and guided her to a chair. “Would you like coffee or something else to drink?”

  “Coffee,” she said automatically.

It only took seconds to make and when she took her first sip, Falcon was relieved to see life come back to her eyes.

“So, you have coffee?” her voice shook.

“We have coffee, several types of booze, cow’s milk, almond milk, and probably soy.”

She shuddered. “Bite your tongue. We had dairy cows on the ranch until our parents died. There is no milk that doesn’t come from a cow.”

He smiled. “The point is, you don’t have to give up anything, Makayla. We may run out of something for a bit. But if it is really important to you, I will ensure you have an adequate supply.”

She frowned up at him. “An adequate supply for what? See, that is where I keep getting lost. I know we are going to look for the girls. But when you talk, it’s like searching for the girls is just a minor issue and what I’ve signed up for is much bigger.”

He nodded. “Finding the girls is the first priority and will be for as long as it takes. The rest can be explained. It is a lengthy process and I will start at the beginning. Do you want something to eat while we talk or just the coffee?”

“Coffee is good. I don’t want any distractions for this, but I do want more coffee.” She tried to smile but he could see the nerves behind it.

He filled her cup and brought a thermal carafe to the table so she could replenish her coffee as often as she wanted. It was the only comfort he could give her at this point.

“The last question you asked me was about dimensions,” Falcon started.

She nodded. “Obviously my earth education is not up to speed when it comes to life on other planets. And I have no idea what a freaking dimension is.” She looked thoughtful. “Unless all the sci-fi shows were right.”

Falcon shrugged. “I have no idea how Earth entertainment portrays dimensional realms. The reality is, there are dimensions surrounding Earth and other planets. You can think of these dimensions as really big blankets that surround the planet and that blanket has folds and ripples that touch the ground in places. Where these folds touch the Earth is where you will find a gate. Earth is known as the First Realm and there are doorways linking your world and the Others.”

He hesitated for a bit. “Even though your planet remains the only one in the universe that is unaware of life on other planets and realms—and they haven’t developed deep space travel—Earth has always been known as the mother planet. Most of the homo sapiens in the other dimensions and on other planets—originated on Earth. They fell into other dimensions or were kidnapped, and eventually migrated to other planets.”

He swept a hand down his silver body. “Evolution made changes to these early humans.”

In each of the physical realms, there are dimensional beings that resemble Earth’s homo sapiens. They look like the men and women you are familiar with, yet there are differences. Variations in such things as skin and hair color. It will be the same for the flora and fauna of other planets and dimensions. Some will resemble things on Earth and others are very different.”

Kayla grinned. “You mean like us with silver skin and neon hair? I think I’m a little disappointed by that. It would have been nice to have something not quite human.”

“Like dragons? You can find them in the Fifth Realm. Some of them have been trained to take riders. Merpeople populate the planet of Mermonia, and in one world there are sentient beings who resemble an octopus. Believe me, Makayla, there is a universe full of beings, some of them moral and happy and some evil and willing to do anything for credits or money, just like on earth.”

“Okay. I can understand that. There are all types of beings throughout the planets and dimensions and not all of them are good. Like the Siloth.”

“There might even be good Siloths. I haven’t met any but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Their planet is harsh, and they are raised in a hive mentality. But the point I was trying to make was that someone has to protect the innocent. To rescue those like your sister and cousin and keep evil from using the universe as its playground. The dimensional gates surrounding the planets and in space are guarded, but things still manage to slip through or those who are allowed travel, cause trouble.”

“Let me guess. When things slip through, someone has to track them down?”

“Usually. Some of the creatures cause death and destruction. Some, we just don’t want those who live on Earth, to know they exist. Some of the things that slip through are benign. They are just simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes we don’t recover the creatures before someone on Earth sees them. I’m sure you’ve heard stories of Big Foot or the Loch Ness Monster?” When she nodded, he continued, “Those were benign creatures from other Realms who slipped through the gates. By the time they were returned to their own Realm they left a legacy behind, one that incites Earth humans to keep searching for the ‘mystical’ creatures.”

Makayla had started to lift her coffee cup to her mouth when she stopped and pinned him with a look. “Okay, I get that. So, what about the ones who slip through and aren’t benign? What happens to them?”

“Some planets and dimensions are big enough or advanced enough to have their own police force. But they must acknowledge the existence of beings from other realms or they can’t protect against them. And the resources are very different. Each Realm has its issues. There are criminals, beings who are truly evil, and some that are no more than animals seeking prey. Many of the beings in these Realms have enhanced abilities. They can fly, or change shape, or animate the dead. The list is endless.”

“Okay. That makes sense. And I would guess that Earth doesn’t police its own borders, not really, because they have no idea there are other realms and planets, so they wouldn’t know how to deal with the creatures that show up. Like the Siloths.” Makayla frowned. “So is there some type of intergalactic police force. Or army?”

Falcon nodded and watched her intently as he said, “Yes. This is what a Guardian and his Keeper are tasked with. We keep the universe safe from the worst of the Jumpers. Guardians are initially chosen for their willingness to travel to all the Realms throughout the universe, to track down beings that have moved through the gates and throughout all inhabited planets in space—to cause harm.”

MAKAYLA BLINKED. Guardians and their Keepers. She clearly remembered Falcon telling her that she was his Keeper. She knew he was watching her closely and she wasn’t ready to meet his gaze. “So, what exactly is a Keeper? What do they do?”

“You are the Keeper of my Tomorrows.”

“You keep saying that. Tell me what it means, Falcon,” she demanded.

Falcon carefully reached out to take one of her hands in his. He looked at her intensely and explained, “In my Realm, beings live for centuries. If we are chosen to be a Guardian, that life is extended even further. In the beginning, we learn to chase Jumpers and explore the universe, but within a few hundred years all that time we spend alone begins to wear us down.”

He squeezed her hand. “After the first several hundred years, a Guardian must find their Keeper, who becomes the custodian of their soul and all the days to come. Without this partner, time begins to draw on us. There is nothing to keep us going and we begin to fade and eventually our essence will hibernate. Without our Keeper, we have no anchor to our physical bodies. Our Keeper must recognize us and accept us, or our knowledge and life will fade into nothingness.”

Makayla held up her hand to stop him. She frowned and looked in his eyes. “Is this why I felt like I knew you?”

Falcon sighed. “It could be that our souls recognize each other. There is only one possible Keeper for each Guardian. Once I found your soul, I followed it thro
ughout all time and through every country you lived in and every incarnation. Each time I found you and you refused me. I would only be awake for a short period during your adult years. When you didn’t accept me, I returned to the void to wait for the next time you were reborn and grew to adulthood. When your soul was re-born every two or three hundred years, I would wake again and try to convince you to come with me. I didn’t have much luck with that.”

Makayla studied him for a moment and then started laughing. “Did you pop through a door in your silver alien body, or show up naked to make a big impression?”

He dropped his head, embarrassed. “The Guardian rules say we must give a true showing of ourselves to get our Keeper’s agreement.”

“Oh, my hell. It is a wonder someone didn’t grab you and burn you at the stake for being a witch, or stone you to death for heresy, or any number of horrible ends.”

He grinned. “You have tried to pummel me to death several times, although usually with something heavier than a pillow. And often you enlisted help.”

They laughed together and ended up grinning at each other like fools.

Falcon refilled her coffee and said, “There are other Guardian pairs. Which is what we call a Guardian and their Keeper. Many of my kind have finally found the acceptance they sought in the last few years. It is believed so many new pairs have formed because Earthlings aren’t so mired in their belief in the devil and those who live on the planet are more open to the existence of aliens. But a Guardian cannot serve without their Keeper. You hold the best half of my heart and you are the willing and honored vessel for our future.”

She closed her eyes and held the cup of coffee to her lips. Breathing in the familiar scent and thinking. Was she troubled to find out that her entire life up to this point was now erased? Besides the girls, she had no living relatives and while she had enjoyed the ranch, it really wasn’t worth getting upset about. Working it wouldn’t have been what she would have chosen to do if she didn’t have the girls.

Before her parents died, she had planned to make a career out of the army. When she was old enough to retire, she planned on working for law enforcement. It was weird that she had always wanted to help people, to protect them.

And now she got to be a Guardian.

She didn’t have a complete grasp on what that meant, but it sounded like more of an adventure than working on the ranch. And saving the girls was more important than keeping their life the same. Once she and Falcon found them, they could take the girls anywhere. It would just mean making a few changes in their lives. As long as they were safe, other things would fall in place. “Why me?”

Falcon was still holding her hand. He brought it to his lips and gently kissed her fingers. Her body shuddered in response.

He took a sip of his coffee and held her gaze. “Guardian pairs are yin and yang, two souls that were intertwined at conception. Many thousands of your years ago our souls were joined, yours to mine. Now I have been chosen to be a Guardian and you have been reborn—destined to take your place at my side in this time. You will live longer, be stronger, and have other skills needed to fight any enemy. Without your acceptance of me, we couldn’t work to rid the universe of evil. We are needed to stop Siloth not just now, but into the future.”

“Okay, but how does that work? Does someone give us orders?” She looked at the monitor on the wall, noticing the passing planet that was covered with a green haze, and then turned to him.

He shrugged. “We just answer the call to duty when it is given.”

Makayla took a deep breath. As retired military, answering the call of duty was something she understood.

Before she could come up with another question he cut in, “And when we have children, we will make the changes you are comfortable with.”

She pulled her hand back, angry. “Don’t make fun of me, Falcon.”

He forced her to give him back her hand. He smugly informed her, “I don’t make fun of you, my Keeper. I know the damn Siloth assumed you were past childbearing years. But in your current form, it is possible to have my children for another couple hundred years.”

She stared at him with a blank look, then pointed at him, “If that is true, I want to know why and how. AND you won’t touch me until we have some form of birth control. I would like to have a baby some time, but not right now.”

Before Falcon could comment, her stomach growled. Loudly.

  Chapter Nine

MAKAYLA SHOOK HER HEAD. “That is a topic for another time. I need to eat. I’d love comfort food and around the farm that meant breakfast. Do you have eggs and bacon? Or maybe pancakes and hash browns?”

Falcon pushed a few buttons on a microwave looking thing that evidently could flash defrost meat and cook a meal. “We have it. I’ll show you how to run the machine tonight and you can have a steak. The beef will look and taste as if it had been butchered the day before.”

“I’ll be the judge of that.” She admitted to being more than a little picky about having fresh meat and hoped for the best.

In just three minutes he laid a plate in front of her that was loaded with exactly what she asked for. She poked the egg and picked up the piece of bacon. She took a bite and raised one eyebrow. Quickly scooping up a bite of eggs, and then the pancakes.

He could live. He was right, this was pretty close to what she would have made at home.

She let out a breath she wasn’t aware she was holding. She’d been nervous about the food. A lot could be overlooked or fixed if the food was good. Once she was finished, she thought about all they’d talked about and realized she still had a few questions.

“So. Am I going to start oozing Binding Pollen from my skin too? Anything else you need to tell me about this new body?” she asked.

He smiled. “The Binding Pollen appears only on my body. It isn’t always there, although it may seem so right now. But the simple explanation is that most of the time the dust appears when you need it. I can’t produce the pollen for anyone else. Only for you, Makayla. One of the properties will allow you to pass undetected through the dimensional gates. The pollen has changed your physiology so that you will be recognized by the gates and some dimensional beings as part of a Guardian pair. This allows us to do our job undetected and without having to stop whenever we need to go through a gate.”

  She nodded. “That makes sense.”

Watching Falcon talk, she thought about how attracted she was to him. She couldn’t go after Kaitlyn and Lauren without his help. When that thought sank in, it helped alleviate most of the guilt. Without Falcon’s ship, his Guardian training, and his willingness to search for her family—she wouldn’t be here.

So, she would try and let go of that guilt and enjoy the time she had with him.

“The second reason for the Binding Pollen’s existence is to keep you healthy. I was born in a Realm that makes me stronger and faster. My skin is thicker than yours, which provides a type of protective shield, making it difficult to cut or scrape. The Binding Pollen will make you stronger, faster, and your skin will thicken a little over time. But you will always be more susceptible to harm than me. If you get hurt, injured in any way, or become sick...the Binding Pollen will manifest to speed up your healing. When you need healing, especially for a life-threatening injury or disease, the properties of the pollen somehow change to caring and comfort, more than sex.”

Kayla grinned. “I’m sure that eventually, that will be a relief. The pollen is great for healing.” She stuck her leg out and wiggled it. “Really great. But I’d hate to feel this physical hunger all the time.”

He reached over and lifted her leg, so her foot was in his lap. He took off her thick sock and started rubbing her leg and foot.

Within a few moments, she was biting back her moaning need. Those hands felt so good. She didn’t realize she had so much tension in her feet.

“Now that your conversion is complete, the Binding Pollen will be focused on reversing the effects of Earth’s pollution
and your natural aging process. It will work until you are at peak health, then the Binding Pollen will only appear when you get injured or need it for some reason. Or when we make love. Then it is only released when you rub the little bump on the roof of my mouth. We can make love without pollen if you don’t touch the bump.”

Makayla giggled. “I love that bump. And you just keep rubbing my foot, Falcon. That feels amazing.”

“The bump allows me to stimulate the deluge of pollen when you are sick or injured and can’t do it yourself. But it is there most of the time for our pleasure.”

Makayla narrowed her eyes when she thought of another question. “How do you know that I really am your Keeper? I mean, couldn’t it be anyone?”

“No. It couldn’t be anyone.” He sounded grumpy. “There is only one Keeper for each Guardian. I followed your soul through time and only woke when you were an adult. Even then you had a choice to accept me or not. Each soul is re-born every two or three hundred years and I was awakened only when your soul called to me.”

  “You slept between times?’

He nodded. “Yes. Sometimes for a very long time. Although it’s not really sleeping, it’s more a sort of stasis or period of inactivity. When Guardians are in this state, we aren’t actively aware of anything. Yet we mark the passing years and all the changes in the world. That way when we wake up, we have an overall knowledge of what has happened during the time we slept. Otherwise, things like airplanes or computers or the need for legal identification would be too confusing.”

“That makes sense. So obviously, I’ve refused you before?” she questioned.

He smiled sadly. “Many times. More than I’d like to think about. Remember that your first lives were many hundreds of years ago. You couldn’t understand that there could be other Realms. You could never get past the fact that I had silver skin and shocking red hair.”
