The Prophecy Of Hope Page 22

by Kelly Hall

“Don’t be ridiculous,” she made a move, but something else got her attention. Rocks fell beside him, and when Rebekah turned, she saw Canter and Katie climbing over the rubble, both looking like they’d been through hell. “Oh no!” She and Ignis both made a move to help, Ignis getting to Katie first as Rebekah made her way to Canter. “What happened?”

“Grady,” said Canter, who was short of breath and watching Katie, who Ignis snatched up quicker than he could blink. “We were in the tower when I saw him. He caused it to fall, but thankfully, we were on top, so we managed to avoid too much landing on us.”

“That’s a hell of a way to come down,” said Rebekah. She couldn’t help but think of how Ignis had told her to keep the hunters out of his library, and she knew it wouldn’t help things between her and her best friend. She wished Canter had stayed away, but what was done, was done.

“Indeed,” said Ignis, calling from below, where he’d gotten Katie from the pile of stone. “I told you what would happen if you didn’t keep your hunters out of my library,” he said as if he’d read her mind.

“Ignis, I think that can wait. We need to get these two cleaned up.” She still had to get Canter down from the pile. “Grady could still be lurking around somewhere. And since we know he’s been affected by the stigmata, we’re going to have to be extra careful.”

Rebekah could see that Katie was frozen with fear, still shaken by the fall, and she couldn’t blame her. It wasn’t every day that the ground fell out from under her. “Let’s get her inside.” As she stepped closer, her stomach coiled. “Grady is close. Let’s hurry. Bring her, Ignis.” She turned toward the door, and Canter went to get Katie.

But there was another rumble, and Katie screamed. When Rebekah turned around, Ignis had knocked Canter down and taken his knife. The young hunter was on the ground retching, dark energy keeping him down.

“What are you doing?” Rebekah was so confused.

“When will you learn that I make the rules, Rebekah? I’ve always made the rules.” Ignis brought the knife down, driving it through Katie’s heart.

“No!” Rebekah watched Katie’s eyes as they widened for the last time, the life fading from them. Rebekah was so angry at Ignis, not understanding what had gotten into him. He had been her lifelong friend for what gain? So he could try and make some crazy power play? This couldn’t be true, but she’d seen it with her own eyes, and now, she was going to have to act.

She pulled Stella from her scabbard, but as she was about to make her move, the ground shook again, this time tossing more rocks from the already ruined wing.

But then, as if things weren’t crazy enough, a blinding white light came from everywhere, too blinding to see anything.

Canter fought against the searing light to get to Katie, who now lay on the ground. The intense glow reflected off the pool of blood she lay in. No longer burdened by the heavy feeling of evil, he quickly pulled her into his lap, the blade of his own knife still lodged deep in her heart.

“No. No. No.” He didn’t know what to do for her. He couldn’t think clearly, and while part of his brain told him not to make things worse by removing the knife, something else told him it was no use what he did. She was gone.

She lay limp and pale in his arms. Her blood had already soaked the ground where Ignis had dropped her and stained the front of her clothes.

“It’s okay,” said a voice from the light. “She’s already crossed over. She’s found peace.”

Canter looked up at Aziel with a hopeless look in his eyes. “She can’t be gone.” It had all happened too fast and his mind was still scrambling.

Aziel didn’t know what to say, but his mission was complete. He’d made a bargain to be able to help the Immortal Huntress, and now he’d fulfilled his duties.

Canter was broken. His Katie was gone. “Why didn’t you stop him?”

“It was her time. If I had let you go after him, he would have killed you all. I’ve done all I can.” He wasn’t allowed to interfere with anything, and while he wanted to stay with Rebekah and his friends forever, he had to report back to Michael, knowing that his life was never going to be the same. “Goodbye.” The light dimmed, and Aziel was gone.

Rebekah blinked as the light faded to normal, and she was left holding her blades as her rage built inside. Ignis had escaped, and Canter held Katie’s lifeless body. She didn’t know what had come over Ignis, but making good on his threat had come as a shock.

Suddenly, everything she knew was a lie, and Ignis had not only made Canter pay, but he had destroyed his library to protect himself. What kind of dark secrets was he hiding? She was done trusting. It was time to find out everything he had never told her.
