by Barbara Cartland

“I will do everything I can to find out what has happened to her,” the Duke promised, “but I think you must prepare yourself for the worst. I suspect that she was killed trying to escape just as those criminals at Thuburbo Maius might have killed us.”

“And – Monsieur Charlot!” Mimosa murmured.

“You told me that he was blackmailing you,” the Duke reminded her.

“He came here – believing me to be Minerva,” Mimosa explained. “He claimed that he had – some letters that he would show to the Comte’s wife unless I paid him fifty thousand francs!”

“Well, I shot him,” the Duke said, “and I have already notified the Police of his death. They told me that they had been suspicious for some time that he was blackmailing and kidnapping people in this country, but they could not catch him in the act of doing so.”

“He was an – evil man,” Mimosa murmured.

“Then let us pray we meet no more like him, my darling. But, if we do get into a tight spot, you will save me again as you saved me in Thuburbo Maius.”

“You must be very – very careful,” Mimosa warned, “because I – cannot lose you.”

“You will never do that,” the Duke answered. “It is my belief, my precious, that we have been together before in other lives and, now that we have found each miraculously other in this life, the Gods will be kind to us.”

He gave a sigh before he went on,

“I know now that you are what I have been looking for all my life and thought I would never find.”

“And I was praying,” Mimosa murmured, “that I would find somebody I could love as Mama loved Papa and be as happy as they were.”

“That is what we will be!” the Duke insisted firmly.

Then he was kissing her again, kissing her until the stars seemed to merge with the sea.

The moon enveloped them with its silver light that appeared to come from Heaven and it was the Light of the Gods.

As the Duke drew Mimosa closer and closer still to him, he was saying a prayer of thankfulness because he had found what all men seek.

It was the perfection of Love, a Love that was unspoilt, pure and true.

It was the Love that is part of the Divine.
