Just like I adored mine.
My daughter fists my shirt and squirms against me. It’s getting close to supper time. I know Casey will cut her food in precise sizes and arrange them in just a way on her plate so she won’t get upset.
My Casey is a good mother.
She’s good inside. Unlike that shitty mother of hers. Casey is a calm to my chaos. A rainbow after my storm.
I breathelicktastetouchsmellfeelneed her.
As if she can sense the emotions tumbling through me like weeds in the desert on a windy spring day, she turns, shading her blue eyes with her hand, and grins at me.
“I love you.” I can’t hear the words, but I can read them on her lips. I feel them in my soul.
My Casey.
Sweet, perfect Casey.
“Dadda.”
My attention is stolen by the cherub in my arms. “Penny.”
“Momma?” she asks.
I point outside. She turns around and lies her head back. Together we stare at the suns in our dark world.
My wife and my boy wave.
Penny and I don’t wave back.
But I do say I love you in a way they understand.
I smile.

Dear Reader,
I hope you fell in love with these characters. My Torin, Tyler, and Casey are all near and dear to my heart. Research for this book was eye-opening, heart-wrenching, and beautiful. Many misconceptions I’d had about what I thought I knew were squelched as I began to really peel apart the layers of the disorders brought to light in this book. I found it sad to see real people and their struggles to fit in. I found joy when they discovered happiness. It makes me see others with new eyes and I hope you will too.
