“Energy burst could be maser impact. Could be sublight drive. Could be both. Energy spike together. Simultaneous.”

Raul turned his robotic head slowly. He looked directly at Boss Grogg, who shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

“You mean to tell me our weapons impacted the ship at precisely the same time as the sublight drive was activated?”

  Long pause. “Probable.”

“And, if it survived, with our long-range sensor array down, we have no way of knowing where the Stinger is?

  Another pause. “Yes.”

“How soon before the sensors are functional?”

  “Not possible.”

“What do you mean ‘not possible’?”

“Sensors down. No way to fix here. No way to know exact trajectory. Maser impact could also affect trajectory. Ship could be anywhere. Possible locations in hundreds or thousands.”

Raul looked at the large viewscreen on the bridge. The Grogg on the command deck exchanged glances with each other. Boss Grogg’s eyes were trained on Raul, who broke the awkward silence.

“We’ll continue with the plan, Chart a course for the Duuvl System. And put a price on Reg’s head. If he’s still alive, I want him found.”

Raul looked down at the key card in his hand. It belonged to the scientist who developed the processor for the RAUL line of robots at the Aval Corporation.

“There are many questions. And I want answers.”
