Hunting Darkness Page 19

by Savannah Rose

Brotus gives way to him and he steps up to the side of my bed, digging his nails into my scalp as he pulls me toward him. “You fucking scared me,” he says and if I didn’t know I was losing it before, I know it now. In complete contrast to Brotus, Merlidon crashes his lips against mine and steals a few breaths from my lungs, replacing them with his own. The feeling that spreads inside my chest is not one I’m sure I’m okay with feeling, but there’s nothing I can do about it. I kiss Merlidon back, just as fervently as he kisses me, our lips only partying when Lucifer’s voice splits through the air.

“Easy there Merlidon. If you mark her, I might have to make an enemy out of you.”

“He’s jealous,” Merlidon whispers into my mouth and I smile. I don’t know why, but I do.

“You said you were okay with – “ I start to say in defense of the way my lips greedily ate up at Merlidon’s.

Lucifer shoots Merlidon a look. “There are parts of you that I know will belong to each of them and I’m okay with that. If nothing else, it means they’ll protect you with every inch of their being. What I’m not okay with, is that asshole being greedy and trying to take the parts of you that only belong to me.” He shoots Merlidon another look and the both of them burst out laughing.

After a moment of silence has fallen between us, I say, “I don’t remember anything. I thought I died.”

“You were near, nearer than I was.” He let out a ragged breath. “I never thought I would be so happy to say that. If I had been as close to dying as you were, I wouldn’t have had the strength to feed on you.”

I turn to him. He’s already watching me, black eyes filled with love and relief. “That’s what saved us?”

He nods. “We almost scared the other two to death.”

“By the looks of it, it gave Merlidon a few grey hairs.”

Brotus laughs. “The grey hairs are one thing. You should have heard the way he was bawling like a two year old.”

Merlidon shakes his head at us and crunches a fist against Brotus’ forearm. The action is only half playful.

Brotus laughs and the sound instills such happiness in me, I smile in response. The two of them leave the room, leaving me and Lucifer to ourselves.

“Is she really gone?” I ask once they’re no longer within earshot.

“Yes,” he says. “You made a good call.”

I took a chance is what I did. I also killed my mother, but somehow that doesn’t sting the way I think it should. Which isn’t entirely surprising, she hadn’t ever been a part of my life and the time she decides to show up, she didn’t exactly do so with pleasantries.

I didn’t have a choice, really. The relief I feel is staggering. I don’t care anymore what’s happening in the human realm. I don’t care about Mr. Black and the lies he told me – or, rather, the truth he failed to tell me – nor do I care about what’s going on with the Guild. I’m just happy it’s all over and the danger is gone.

“What do we do now?” I ask him.

He takes a moment to answer. He reaches over and places a well needed kiss on my lips before he says, “We live.”

Cut the head off one and two more will appear. Her last words echo through my head. I grip his hand tighter.

Yes. There’s nothing else to do, nothing else I can do. “We live.”
